The discussion centers on the WaPo top ten list (which STAB doesn’t fall within) and I would argue the opposite. Broadneck, Oakton and Dominion have everything to lose by playing GC, SR, and other near-top ten DMV teams. Big deficit losses would knock them out of top ten contention and undermine the public / private program balance narrative they (and the WaPo writers) want the public to believe exists in the DMV. Not a knock on VA publics - they don’t play in the same competitive leagues the privates do. Just play the best to be the best and let the scores settle the debate.[/quote]

It's just not worth it except the absolute top publics. Especially when the top privates can play each other and potentially play solid out-of-state programs. When you already have to schedule weaker opponents from your own league, coaches want tough OOC schedules.

And yes, kids going to stronger HS programs just typically get better faster, generally. There is more competition day in and day out at practice regardless of the coach sometimes. That doesn't mean girls that can't and/or don't go to these HS can't be just as good. But as a whole, they just end up ahead of the game due to their spring. IMO, this is most notable summer after freshman year. Most kids that may not go to Visi b/c of the coaching will end up at another private.[/quote]
