Shen Yun warning

I didn’t know and have always wondered what was up with those performances. Thanks for the heads up.

Relax, it’s not hate speech, it’s simply a different belief. If you disagree, don’t go to the show. I’m not a fan, but I think it’s important to be tolerant and open to hearing other peoples’ opinions. Remember the quote- “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

OP is just making people aware of what it is since it’s not obvious from the advertising.

Also the Shen Yun cult sexually abuses women and children. Wouldn't want to support that even if I WAS religious!

Is there any similar style show on the East coast that we could go to instead of giving our money to that organization? My kids REALLY wanted to see Shen Yun until I explained their beliefs, but I would love an alternative, even if it’s slightly less impressive.

Everyone has bad beliefs. The problem in Shen Yun is the preaching in the show.

Try Cirque du Soleil

OK, it's legal, but it's still intentionally deceptive advertising and I don't want to pay someone to tell me insulting lies about me.

It's been many years and recently I finally heard for the first time a mention of the word "Communism" in their advertising. ("China before Communism".)

It was a mistake to just skim the results without reading something more in-depth about the show (like the New Yorker piece). I never thought that Kennedy Center would put such a crap on one of its stages.

Again, we may be slow on the uptake, but we did not take away any huge message from it. But the dancers were genuinely impressive.

I agree that the dancers were impressive. I wish the show was limited to dance and acrobatics. But they crossed the line several times raging against evolution and atheism. That's stupid and hateful at the same time.

And I wish Rage Against the Machine would butt out of politics

What can go wrong in a show presented in a prestigious cultural venue like Kennedy Center? Big mistake. Relatively early in the show you learn that "Between atheism and evolution, Satan lurks." Close to the end, they make sure to send the message again: "Atheism and evolution are the Devil's deceit." As atheist and scientist, I was shocked that I ended up supporting a fundamentalist religious group, while the show is advertised as a Chinese cultural experience. I am not sure what options I have at this point, but I don't want to just let it go.

I know. Their ads (and affiliations with legit venues ) are very deceptive. It is proselytizing (dressed up like performance art).

And yet Shen Yun constantly fundraises in this area to support their fundamentalist religious propaganda. More people should become aware of what they are supporting.

That’s right, the key distinction is that it’s fundraising and proselytizing. It’s not a dance group that has a set of beliefs, it’s a religious organization that created the dance group for the purpose of furthering their religious agenda. It’s deceptive and distasteful.

Religion is part of culture. China is incredibly diverse and there’s no one single cultural experience that encompasses it. This includes a plethora of religious identities ranging from fundamentalist in any faith to atheism.

The reviews are magnificent so thousands are enjoying it. It’s described as magical and beautiful. People travel to see it. It’s not allowed to be performed in China. Shows sell out because of its beauty. I think it would be worth trying it!

The dancing is good and the indoctrination is crap.

Everyone has their own priorities.
