Actually it sounds many of them are confused. |
This entire thread is absolutely ridiculous. All of the parents who have been posting replies with nasty comments about Barnard, the Barnard-Columbia connection, or about Barnard women in general should be so ashamed of themselves.
I have seen this debate happen countless times on both the internet and in real-life and I was caught so off guard by so many FULLY GROWN adults saying the malicious things that they said. You are probably a 40+ year old parent saying that people, including any current Barnard student, who have an opinion that’s different than yours on the Columbia connection are “embarrassing” or “pathetic.” Please take some time to reflect on your words and your actions, because they are incredibly rude and to some degree, unfounded. Yes, Barnard exists as a an independent institution. However, there is no doubt that at the very MINIMUM, an affiliation exists with Columbia University. I am a Barnard student and I am proud to say I go to Barnard. HOWEVER: our degrees are from Columbia. All but two of my classes this semester are at Columbia. All of the clubs and student organizations I am in are at Columbia. I have friends at Columbia. I eat at Columbia dining halls. I coexist with CC, SEAS, and GS undergrad students. The damn gates of our school say Barnard College of Columbia University. So no, I don’t judge when one of my peers’ Instagram bio says Barnard Columbia ‘27. I understand that at the end of the day people can have their own opinions on the relationship and claim that Barnard is not even in the slightest the same as Columbia. I don’t mind it but I, just like every other Barnard woman, am so tired of the same repetitive debate over and over again. I would like to add that I would never feel the need to write such a long post or reply on ANY thread like this, but I am not kidding when I say that from any place that I have seen this debate take place I have never been so appalled. Reading some of these threads made me realize that the absolute worst sides of the debate are from ignorant and uneducated parents on the internet that project their hidden inferiority complexes by putting down young women in college for the institution they attend. Truly a shame. Do better. |
Just say I go to Barnard. "I go to Barnard Columbia" sounds so cringe. |
Barnard is an independent college that doesn’t issue its own diplomas, grant tenure to its own faculty, or have its own sports teams - Columbia does all of that for them.
There is one course catalog for both schools. You can live in any dorm at either school. But… they have their own admissions staff and their own budget. Students feel strongly the school has its own identity. In summary, Barnard is a land of contrasts. |
I am a Columbia alum (graduated in the 90s) and can say that unfortunately there are trolls, although I am somewhat surprised to hear that you have come across them in real life. Usually they live and fester only on the Internet. I find it pathetic and sad to try to put anyone down, I see this as the ultimate sign of insecurity. You have to ignore all the noise and silliness. I hope you are having a fantastic time at Barnard!!! When I was in college, I took many classes at Barnard and often ate there. The Barnard/Columbia relationship is a bonus to the greater community. |
Since this is anonymous, I will say what I really think. It is so ridiculous when parents claim their kid goes to an Ivy when they actually go to Barnard. Most of the students applied to Barnard because there was no way they could get into Columbia and they really wanted an Ivy or NYC location. |
Can Barnard students apply to transfer to Columbia after a year or two? |
More like the former does everything but needs to put a man's pretty face out front to placate the ignorant public. (See also Ronald and Nancy Reagan.) |
They are already at Columbia. |
The real issue is that the admissions standard are so different between Barnard and Columbia college/engineer. Barnard is a great LAC, but its students cannot get into Columbia college/engineer. It is certainly embarrassing and false for Barnard students/graduates to say they go to an ivy. |
Its an easy backdoor access for wealthy applicants. That being said, its a great school in its own tier. |
99% of people don’t care. The 1% who does are insufferable snobs who are afraid someone will claim to go to Columbia, when if fact they were admitted to an “inferior” school. Get over it. |
They live in the same dorms and take the same classes and get the same diploma. Shows how fake college rankings are, yeah totally different schools except for the part where they are exactly the same school. Snobs will find any petty hook to claim they are superior because they have psychological problems. |
You are so insecure! Go over it. |
