Do you know where I can purchase meat and chicken that has been marinaded with the appropriate spices and which we can then just grill or BBQ at home as and when we want to do so?
I have heard there are a some families that do this as a side-business and what they offer is very tasty. |

| Go to a halal butcher. They usually have this available. If you live in NOVA Halaco is very popular. You can also find Shaan Masala there. Follow the directions and rub on your chicken and you will get a similar result. |

| Buy the marinades from Patak's or a similar brand. Depending on which Giant/Safeway you go to, they should have them there in the "Asian" aisle. Mix meat and marinade (sometimes add yogurt), marinate overnight, and have a good dinner the next day! |
Can you recommend any particular marinades? I always keep a jar of their Mild Curry paste, but it is very thick to use as marinade... any tricks there? |

| Lots of halal butchers have these: Asal in Vienna (Persian style), Medina Market in Herndon (Pakistani style), al Nakeel in Vienna (Arab style). |
I often mix it with yogurt to make a tenderising marinade. It is very good that way. |

I am in Great Falls. FYI, I went to Madina Market in Herndon and bought ready prepared beef shawarma - cooked there. Just to try it out and see if I liked it. I did not care for it in terms of the taste. They do provide kebabs for broiling at home all duly marinaded but given my experience with the shawarma, not sure if the kebabs would be suitable (in terms of the taste) especially since they require a minimum purchase that would be for about $40. I also bought some Shaan spice mix for kebabs based on another PP's recommendation. Will try it out and see how it tastes. |
PP, following your recommendation, I used the Shaan masala for kebabs and grilled them on the BBQ for lunch earlier today and the result was excellent. The process was easy. About the only issue was I used ground beef and followed the instructions on the package. The kebabs did not stay completely intact. Should I use some bread crumbs to keep it together next time. The instructions did not call for it. Thanks for the suggestion re Shaan masala. |
