Can you earn extra money?

Or is your income fixed?

What do you do when you need extra money?
I work in healthcare. So, I just pick up and extra shift if I need more money.

I am a CPA and have a PhD in finance. I've done taxes, teaching at the community college, and tutoring.

I can work some overtime depending on projects. I do sometimes when I know I need to get a lot done in a short time but not really for the money.

How much can that make?

I'm an RN, but work in clinic. Not much opportunity to pick up shifts. I do look for flu shot clinics, camp registrations, etc

I work in tech now, but while in grad school I had a different job. When I want to earn a bit more I do some side jobs related to my old profession.

Where do you do this? Both DH and I have graduate degrees & work in quasi-academia, this would be perfect!

I always get asked this, every time. Look at firms like accepted.com, veritas, amerasia, clearadmit, etc. Admissions411 has a list of companies who do this. Or just google "graduate school admissions consulting" In general they want people with some admissions background (previously volunteered with an office, did interviews as an alum, etc). My focus is MBA admissions but you'll find several firms with other niche targets (ie law school, med school). The other thing I tell people is that schools often hire part time admissions staff for the influx of apps that come in during the fall/winter. Another option, albeit paid less well, is to call your alma mater and see if they need people.

No. I work for the fed govt in national security and even if I wanted to earn more, I'd have to get permission for outside employment which isn't easy.

When I need money, I tighten the budget

I teach an online class. Each year I get asked if I'm interested in teaching any of the 5 terms. I usually put my name forward for 4 terms and average teaching 3. I have the potential for $8k more per year after taxes.

I can't earn extra money. I just cut costs.

My daughter and I live in a 4-bedroom house with our bedrooms upstairs and 2 guest rooms on the main level. I often rent out one of the downstairs bedrooms for extra money (most of which goes straight to savings/debt service). My daughter's dad is losing his contract next month (DOD), so I may have to rent out the other guest bedroom too, if I lose my child support. I'm glad to have the option but it sucks to give up our privacy.
