because he's a moron?

this!!

Well, if he's super stupid, the odds of him accomplishing what he did in that house without help are LOW.

He texted a pic of the money to a friend because it's a cool novelty to handle $40k in cash. He did not know it was a hostage-murder situation! Just that his boss needed the money. Accusing the assistant of skimming off the top is also ridiculous. He'd be fired immediately. Nobody would do that. Geez.

I agree I don't think the assistant was involved. However, I think if I was his employer and knew about him posting pics of my cars and my cash, I would be livid.

The cars- eh. He was a driver in a new exciting job driving cool luxury cars. I think that's ok. The money picture, from what it seems, was just a private picture via text to a personal friend. I think that's ok too. Certainly not weird, criminally minded, or fire able, imo

Well, I disagree. It may not be weird or criminally minded but it is still not the type of thing I'd want my employee sharing about me. The private picture with a friend, might not be such a big deal if it didn't involve huge sums of cash, which I think is a risky thing to share a picture of, with anyone. But the publicly posted pictures of the cars would seriously bother me as his employer. It seems inappropriate...like if my housekeeper were to share pictures of my house, it just feels too personal to me and, again, even if not criminal, it would be unsettling and it IS something I would consider firing someone over.

As a former EA, I would have never shared anything regarding my boss...EVER. However, I do not think he had anything to do with the crime. My guess is he is young and made a poor decision. My older teens take pictures of everything and post them. I warn them of the dangers of doing so.

Possibly he opened a key box to get a spare key out for the Porsche(assistant would want to keep his key on his key chain incase the police ask for his copy) So maybe if there were other perps with Wint maybe they left with the assistant when he dropped off the money(paid other perps, they dropped their vests in the garage and rolled out to Chantilly?) but maybe Wint stayed behind to "finish" the job but the others didn't know what was going to happen and he'd get his own ride home (Porsche). The assistant only worked for SS for 2 months so I don't see a huge trust bond and the police already said that someone involved knew their daily lives (assistant know whole schedule). JMO

I can see the lie if: his boss tells him to drop the $ off, he gets it, takes a pic, sends to friend all giddy (he wears pink pants, maybe he is very flamboyant?). Which he knows is unprofessional, and terrible in hindsight of the concurring events. His naive glee vs the actual terror.
He doesn't know the full scope at all yet, not even the deaths maybe- so when the police ask, yeah of course he locked it, he says, to cover his own ass, not knowing this is a quadruple murder yet. Because in his scrambled mind he thinks that's more professional, that's what he should have done. He didn't think it would be scrutinized. Or that he, an innocent, should be scrutinized.

It seems to me like any foresight or iota of planning at all here would have resulted in far different results. More money, less torture, no deaths.
My hunch is a group of greedy thugs and it went all horribly wrong. Like, perhaps there was disagreement over whether to kill, torture. Maybe one or some thought they could handle it but couldn't? Maybe Wint went far overboard, and the others left?
Ok as I am typing this all out I see what you're saying. The assistant could have been in on the theft but not the killing. Ugh. So sad and senseless.

Has the timeline ruled out possibility that assistant was to make a large cash delivery for chantilly so he instagrammed a few friends a pic of the cash then this pic went to Wint or Wint brother who may have know assistant through AIW and then the Wints decided to act? I think it's unlikely that assistant overlapped with either Wint at AIW or was connected with them on social media but just wondering.

I do think this is true. They could have committed a robbery in a much shorter time span without the staying overnight, the torture, the deaths, and thus would have had a lot less likelihood of getting caught. Now, maybe they couldn't have gotten the same amount of $$ in a shorter time period but they could've gotten some money, some valuables and again, much less likelihood of getting caught, meaning they might have actually gotten to keep/use the money. He/They didn't have much foresight which is easy to determine based solely on the fact that DW got caught because of saliva on pizza crust (which any criminal w/ any foresight would not have ordered pizza!) he/they were just idiots through and through. And to the other poster who said if they were that dumb they couldn't have pulled this off? I disagree. He/They just got really lucky, unfortunately. Any number of things could have easily gone wrong to foil his/their plan while it was going down. And, then "pulling it off" depends on your perspective. I don't think he did pull it off successfully seeing as he got caught less than a week later.

Anyone think DW will talk? Or he doesn't need to?

+1

It is immature and unprofessional and he should have been fired on the spot. I think people need to be aware if they let people in their house, their personal space could be photographed by people who should not be. Hell, my MIL pulls this crap and DH and I read her the riot act. But then again, she's a pretty dim bulb.

I do think the assistant was a distinct liability.

The reason I think that DW did not act alone at the beginning is the several green construction vests in the garage. Why would there be several if he acted alone? Given the road work in the area earlier in the week, they were probably scoping out the property in advance. Also that would explain where the rest of the $40,000 is. I hope he talks. I hope they can threaten federal death penalty charges so he has an incentive to talk. I would say that I hope they rough him up so he talks, but I want this conviction to stick - so things need to be by the book.

Assistant blabs to someone who tells someone who tells DW that the money is coming on Wednesday. DW, thinking he's going to score a quick 40K, goes to house. Upon SS's return, he learns that money isn't coming until Thursday. DW gets pissed and violent.

Assistant knows he may have been original source -- was way too indiscreet -- and is sweating bullets. Tells some self-serving lies.

Police said at Wint's court hearing Friday that they are still looking for a red car missing from the mansion's garage. It was not immediately clear whether this was the same vehicle.

!! I Didn't know this

It is friable if you are on the receiving end of his photos. Jesus, way to be unprofessional.

yep, this makes sense. What doesn't make sense in this scenario is why SS would have this much cash delivered to his house and why he would trust this relatively newly hired assistant w/ this information

just a thought, anyone think maybe with the box truck DW and others were caught w/, this group was on their way to try to rob someone else and fill the truck w/ loot?
