Is there a kind of "DCUM" for poor people?

Anonymous
I'm not a troll, and I'm not even trying to be snarky. I read DCUM more or less for the lowdown-- local news and information/advice.

I live in a nice, working-class area, at a low-prestige job, and make way less than DCUM says my family and I should be able to survive on.

Growing up, my family was working-class. I worked my way through college and grad school with scholarships and menial jobs. I've never been to Europe, never owned a new car, and my house is probably the size of some of y'all's living rooms. I have special-needs children in public school.

Is there an online place where low-income people can have intelligent discussion (not saying that all DCUM discussion is intelligent, mind)?

One of the things I like about DCUM is that the contributors come from all walks of life. You probably make a lot less than I do, but that doesn't mean I don't want to read what you have to say about a particular topic. In other words, I don't judge somebody's comment based on their perceived wealth.

I grew up poor, like food-stamp poor. I'm doing well now, which means that most of the people I hang around with are high earners like me. I guess that I don't have any "poor" friends. I wish I did because I could use the perspective every once in a while.

Totally agree OP. I get really tired of the "we make half a mil but feel poor!" threads. I just try to stay away from threads I know will go there, or become a pissing contest about who is the richest and classiest. It is ridiculously pervasive on this site though.

This. I just roll my eyes at those threads and read people tips on how to get my kid to eat her veggies or what daycare labels are the best.

Yes. Babycenter. Or thebump (does that still exist?)

No, OP. But please don't feel you're alone. I just got a couch less than a year ago. Still don't have a kitchen table (we eat all meals on the couch or floor). I help myself to the plastic forks and spoons free at TJs a lot. Sometimes when needed, I steal toilet paper from cafes.

I thank goodness for the rich people - they make it possible for DD to go on all the field trips her public school has.

And CityData

I'm not "rich" either, OP. But I certainly don't consider myself anywhere near poor.

They also contribute to a system that helps them get richer while the wages of every day people remain stagnant.
