I want to give DS fish other than tuna for lunch. He likes spicy food, and I'd like some ideas for easy spicy fish recipes. Also, will the fish spoil if it's in thelunch box for 4.5 hrs between packing the lunch in the a.m. and lunchtime at school.
Thanks |
| I send salmon a lot. Either as sushi or grilled with a sauce. I pack it in a container that has a nice pack insert and I put another insert on the bottom and then lay a piece of foil over the ice pack before I put the food on it. |
| Nice = ice |

Japanese rice balls:
http://weelicious.com/2008/04/23/japanese-rice-balls/ Does his lunch box have an ice pack? You can also Packit lunch bag which freezes completely. |
| You're currently packing tuna without doing anything to keep it cold? That's not safe at all. |
To be clear, I totally agree with this, and recommend packing ice packs in the insulated lunchbox. However, in my childhood I think I ate about 5 years' worth of tuna fish sandwiches, and about 4 years' worth of bologna sandwiches, that were packed in baggies in brown bags, and I seem to have survived. |
Yep, lots of tuna sandwiches here, either in brown paper or a metal lunch box with the Partridge family that did that have any cooling or insulating features. I took a food handler's class and they taught us that the acid in mayonnaise acts a preservative, and tuna sandwiches or other sandwiches with mayo last a little longer than a regular sandwich. Nonetheless, I usually send it with an ice pack or a frozen juice box. I am curious about the sushi poster above. 4 hour old sushi is outside my comfort zone. Finally, I'll add that my kid really likes blackened tilapia (I just sprinkle blackening seasoning on and stick it in a pan with a little olive oil) on a caesar salad. |

No cold packs for me and lots of canned salmon sandwiches. I refuse to pack them on principal.
that said, I don't do sushi for lunches! |
| Tilapia BLT is really good. |
| Don't be the mom who sends stinky fish in her kids lunch box. Kids are mean, and that is not cool at all. |
Many types of fish aren't stinky. Grow up, PP. |
You should definitely not pack canned salmon on the principal. That is a sure way to get detention. Canned salmon can be eaten on crackers, bread, pasta, or a nice green salad, all of which work nicely in a lunch box. |
Or the other kids could say "You get to eat that?? Oh man, you're lucky!" Kids will pick at anything. Ewww to fruit, veg, bologna sandwiches, cheese sandwiches, whatever. Send whatever your kid eats. |
| Fish should not be eaten in school OR the office. It is disgusting when people bring fish for lunch to work and stink up the office. I feel the same way about other smelly foods, btw - if I ran my office, I would ban fish and chinese food and microwave popcorn there. |

How about smoked salmon on rye crackers with some wasabi mayo and cucumbers or lettuce?
