I am a new parent at BCC. At the new parent orientation the principal thanked the audience (parents) for choosing BCC and said "I know you have choices." I wasn't aware of any choice I have. I thought if you live in the neighborhood zoned for BCC that's where you have to go.
Anybody know what "choice" she was referring to? My friend thought she might be referring to private school, but I don't think so. TIA |
| Private school |
I don't think she was referring to private school because for most people $38,000/yr is not an option. |
In BCC cluster? It is
|
Don't eye roll. Private is NOT everyone's option. I have friends in Bethesda who can't afford private. If that was indeed her message, then she's slapping folks who only have BCC as their choice. ignorant comment, especially for a former English teacher who should know the definition of generalization |
In last year's orientation, I took it to mean that most of the families who live in the BCC cluster have the resources to be thoughtful about where they send their kids to school. They might be choosing between public or private. They might have thought about school quality when they purchased their house. Even if they didn't think about school quality before they moved into the area, they're in a good enough financial situation that if BCC made their kid miserable they would be able to consider moving. I would consider our family to have "chosen" the BCC cluster. I toured schools, read websites, and asked questions before I signed a lease on my apartment. We aren't wealthy, but we are in a position where there are a number of neighborhoods with apartments we could have afforded. Although school quality wasn't the only factor, it definitely factored into the decision. |
| You could choose to live somewhere else. |
| I read an article in the WaPo a few years back where a principal I think of BCC was going on the offensive selling the school at community meetings to combat defections to privates and/or to lure kids from K - 8 privates to BCC for high school. |

Choices on where to live. Which implies what public schools you can attend.
Since strong high school performance is a main driver of property values in most of the world, as well as 80% of property taxes, it makes sense. Thank you. Please continue to pay your taxes. |

I heard from a BCC 9th grader that there were many new students from the privates this year. Bethesda is also home to many parochial schools, and there are people in Bethesda & Silver Spring who home school.
Personally, I take it as a good sign that she spoke about choices. |
| Several Magnets and test in public choices too no? |
| I doubt she is trying to recruit students. The schools are overcrowded. |
|
OP here- I still don't really know what choices she meant. Is there any type of magnet or another out of bounds school that we could pick? We just left private, so for us and many others that is not an option. Moving, because of the large transaction fees, is not really an option, and we like where we live.

Please elaborate. |
| You may not have choices but many of us do. |
