Is Notre Dame screwing up?

2/3 of the initial large spike were tied to two off-campus parties. The 20% positives of the first week of tests were symptomatic kids and close contacts. They’re building capacity for surveillance and hopefully the U of I saliva test will launch soon. I haven’t seen a date for that.

You can’t determine whether or not the new cases are kids in quarantine or not.

Is it true Notre Dame hasn't sent kids home because they need kids on campus to qualify for their first football game on Sept. 12th? If true, does that mean once they play, the kids can then have green light to depart campus on Sept. 13th, and then football team can play the rest of the season?

I don’t think so. I read that the universities are waiting for the ACC to cancel.

From FIVE professors, none of which teach science or public health.

Everyone at Notre Dame...students, parents, faculty, staff, community...is rooting for this school to come out of this ambitious and untested experiment successfully. Everyone, except for many people on this Forum, who latch on to all of the negatives they can find. Testing is ramping up, cases are trending down. This is good news, for the campus, and the skittish colleges who are watching, waiting, and hopefully, taking notes.

No. There would need to be students there in addition to the players AND some in person classes. And don’t forget basketball season starts soon too.

and the FIVE have tenure. Hardly a sampling of what all faculty think.

I think ACC is going for it.

It doesn't matter what we "hope for" or "wish will happen" --- the virus will spread regardless...

Um, the fact that they have tenure is the reason they feel comfortable speaking out. I would bet there are a ton of non-tenured professors who feel the way they do. I'm sure there are also plenty who don't, but being tenured or non-tenured is probably not what influences how the faculty are feeling. It only affects their willingness to voice it.

The virus is super scary. So worried for my kid at a different college. But, reading this article brings perspective. And, that is why, I sent mine back. However, every family must weigh this decision for themselves. I like the fact that many schools offer a choice - no one size fits all approach. Good luck to all parents out there.

If your kid is healthy with no underlying conditions, he/she will probably be sick for 4 or 5 days. I am on the ND parents facebook page, and I have only read about kids with very mild symptoms. They are living in apartments and hotel rooms and getting groceries and takeout delivered while taking their virtual classes. There were some problems with catering to the kids at first because of a large spike and some glitches, but it is all going pretty smoothly right now. I hope my son doesn't get sick, but I am not super worried about it.
