Petition: Later MCPS school start times

That's silly, PP. Everyone gets to comment. Including me, with one child in HS and one child in college. A later start time for high schools would be great, but I don't see how it's feasible with the current constraints on the system (as discussed in the 2013 bell times study report). And the petition doesn't provide any new ideas. What we have right now is the least bad option, in my opinion.

That’s silly. I’m for the change as I have future MCPS high school students.

I did. But why would one opinion count and not the other side?

Some HS parents may want a later start time but it's for their own needs. They aren't concerned about our kids who are in activities and sports by their own choices or working along with higher level classes and AP's. Or, families who rely on older kids for babysitting (if it's their family or a job). I cannot imagine telling my child they have to drop activities as people are too lazy to get up.

You’re so dramatic. Just how late do you think anyone wants to push back start times that your child would need to drop activities? Even if an activity was moved to before school, but school started later, your child would still be on the same schedule they’re on now.

Some are already before school.

Why can't sports or clubs that currently meet after school change practice/meet to before school if HS starts 9:30am? Can't students meet for extracurricular activities from 7:30-9am+? And any activities that can continue meeting after school can after 4pm? HS sports clubs can be managed you naysayers.

Many already meet before school but there is only so much space at the facilities so the times will not change and these kids will still do their sports from 4-6 AM, and then directly after school. Please, tell me how easily it is managed with other activities as well. If you have a sports and arts kid, it's not easy to fit it all in plus homework. You have both club sports, school sports, school activities and outside activities. Plus, homework. Mine have 1-2 activities a day, sometimes more. One night they don't get home till 10 weekly and we just added something at school and there are many late days (so they will start at that activity, leave for sports, go back to that activity, then home/homework, shower and bed).

And, the issue is transportation. Even school sports not on campus require parent transportation and kids cannot get their license till 16.5. And, that assumes a parent can afford to give their kid a car or share theirs.

PP, isn't tansportation is an issue regardless of school start time? If kids and families are figuring out transportation now, what is the difference if school starts later. Clearly your kid is over scheduled if they have more than one activity per day.

We can drop off ours before going to work. We don’t get a bus. So, lots of transporting.

And it’s not over scheduled if they enjoy it. Too bad you won’t support your kids interests.

Kids can do so much more if they don't have to cram it all over the weekdays. Ha- ours is a three season+summer athlete and has many other extracurricular activities. Figure out your scheduling and your kid won't be burnt out.

if you believe kids need to sleep later then wouldn't that be defeating the purpose of this change?
