if you believe kids need to sleep later then wouldn't that be defeating the purpose of this change?

That was for families insisting their kid has to do sports/clubs but they are against changing school start times because their kid has after school sports or activities. They can sleep earlier because these families insist their kid sleeps earlier than most teens natural clock. For them - Practice, school, homework, sleep at what 9pm?? unlike the majority of teens.

Most of this conversation seems to be focusing on sports and clubs. Those are nice things that we WANT our kids to have and they can be maneuvered around the school schedule, even if it may be inconvenient.

What isn’t being discussed is that some kids NEED to finish school earlier so that they can work after school or provide childcare for their younger siblings. Asking an employer if they could work an hour before school and finish the rest of their shift after school isn’t likely to be well received, and leaving any child younger than 8 alone is illegal.

There's a pretty vocal contingent on Dcum that thinks you shouldn't have kids unless you're rich.

What people don't say is that because SOME HS students have to take care of younger siblings, they can't do sports or extra activities. Whatever change or start time is set, SOME will be left out.

You don’t get how sports and activities work. If your kid needs more sleep tell them to go to bed earlier.

You can do those things without being rich. Both we do offer aid.

Many already meet before school but there is only so much space at the facilities so the times will not change and these kids will still do their sports from 4-6 AM, and then directly after school. Please, tell me how easily it is managed with other activities as well. If you have a sports and arts kid, it's not easy to fit it all in plus homework. You have both club sports, school sports, school activities and outside activities. Plus, homework. Mine have 1-2 activities a day, sometimes more. One night they don't get home till 10 weekly and we just added something at school and there are many late days (so they will start at that activity, leave for sports, go back to that activity, then home/homework, shower and bed).

And, the issue is transportation. Even school sports not on campus require parent transportation and kids cannot get their license till 16.5. And, that assumes a parent can afford to give their kid a car or share theirs.

PP, isn't tansportation is an issue regardless of school start time? If kids and families are figuring out transportation now, what is the difference if school starts later. Clearly your kid is over scheduled if they have more than one activity per day.

We can drop off ours before going to work. We don’t get a bus. So, lots of transporting.

And it’s not over scheduled if they enjoy it. Too bad you won’t support your kids interests.

Kids can do so much more if they don't have to cram it all over the weekdays. Ha- ours is a three season+summer athlete and has many other extracurricular activities. Figure out your scheduling and your kid won't be burnt out.

Three season is different than year round. We have things on weekends and weekday. What do we cut out? Should I tell mine they cannot do thing that they enjoy.

Kids will just go to bed even later.

School is mandatory, other things are not. Step up, Parent!

No need to bother. The matter was already settled.

Had not been settled, PP. The current petition. Not from your decade ago times.

Has something changed from before? Any new ideas that haven't already been considered and rejected? If not, then yes, it has been settled.

Still more evidence that adolescents need to get up later.

I did step up and we make it all work. If we can do it why can’t you?
