She probably got fed up with the a-hole parents.

Or toxic coworkers and admin.

Plus 1. This is my experience as a former teacher

Plus 1 and many friends experiences....it's the adults not the kids. Teachers don't get paid enough for dealing with adults poor behavior on top of a demanding job with mediocre pay.

I would have said that at one point, but behavior has been on a steady decline for the last 10 years.

Honestly, this is probably accurate.

I wouldn't blame her.

Not this late in the year. It’s unprofessional and rude. Anyone can work another 6 weeks. That’s a really $hitty thing to do to her students. Just finish the damn year and move on.

My colleague of 21 years quit in March. She had had enough of the run around with one student in her class who was violent. She asked for help all year. Multiple times per day this student would disrupt the class. He would scream curse words at her and other students and throw things. I almost got hit in the eye with a dry erase board when I went in to help one day. Anyway, they had to divide her class among the other two classes. I refused to take the violent student and so did the other teacher unless the student had a one-on-one. We had the union behind us. Miraculously, admin found a one-on-one for the rest of the year. Parents, if a teacher of 21 yrs quits mid-year, you better believe it is because of something very serious. If I didn't have a child to support, I would've quit a long time ago. Teachers put up with a tremendous amount of BS and everyone has their limits.

Hell, yes. This.

The union & school system where my SIL teaches has a new rule for next school year to try to retain more teachers: teachers physically assaulted by a student no longer need to bare the decision of pressing charges. If a kid hits a teacher, the police are called and it is dealt with that way.

I think if we had that rule here, it'd help more teachers. My neighbor has been hit twice this year alone by two different kids. The admins at her school pressed her not to make it into "a thing" or make "waves" about it. Utterly ridiculous.

How does one press charges against a kid below the age of criminal responsibility?

You press charges against him or her. They will be handled as a juvenile.

She should have just called the police. Admin can deal with the assault on their terms and the police can deal with it on theirs.

Not the right thing imho. Schools need to be able to physically remove kids. They need a rubber room where the kid can calm down and then have consequences. The problem is removing the kids who are learning is too disruptive. The police will just pick the kid up- why can’t a school? I mean I understand lawsuits are the reason why but there should be a nationwide approved way to remove unruly kids from a class. Behavioral health facilities have to do it why can’t schools?

Teacher quits because many parents are severe high-level assholes. They are not willing to take it anymore.
Also, many FCPS teachers hate to work.

Also many people in every profession hate to work.

BTW I worked in an elementary school in NoVa for many years and the number of teachers who "hate to work" I could count on one hand. Frustrated? yes Worn out? yes Burnt out? yes Sick and tired of dealing with parents? yes Hate to work? NO

I ain’t giving up the 3 months off a year between summer and Xmas. I’m not worried that I’m not bribing in 6 figures. I have a quality of life with my family and have my cash hustle on the side.

I think people on DCUM tend to overstate the asshole parents and understate student behavior. I've worked in schools at varying SES levels and I usually have a couple of difficult parents, most I never hear from at all.

I'd agree with this. I know parents here sometimes feel really free to share their anger, but in person, most parents aren't doing that. I can't speak for everywhere, but where I teach, 98% of our parents are some of the most wonderful humans I've ever met. Teachers in my area are quitting for the following reasons:
1) stupid expectations from central office
2) required to do more and more and more and more
3) sometimes due to student behavior
4) the general exhaustion of this particular work

All it takes is a couple though. The one (thankfully her kid is not my student) who shows up 2-3 days every week with her phone out and recording, walking up to whatever staff she sees and demanding they say on camera they won’t make her kid wear a mask or get a covid vaccine? She alone would make me want to quit if I taught her kid.
