Japanese is the one of the least accessible languages in Washington DC. There are no language immersion programs east of the Anacostia River. I would love to see this happen.
Give me your opinions. |
I would suggest high-demand world languages first, specifically Spanish and Mandarin. Japanese is valuable, but more esoteric. |

I'll be really pissed that we moved out of Ward 7.
More seriously, I'm not sure there is a market for Japanese immersion anymore. Wanting to understand anime is not a good basis for a full time immersion school from a parental commitment perspective. Japan is on the down swing so there just isn't as much interest in the language as there used to be. Also, there aren't enough Japanese or Japanese Americans to help shore things up with personal interest in the language. |

Why? Answer that first and I'll give you my opinion. |
I am a charter operator trying to how many gentrifiers would come to my low rent charter if I had some exotic angle? |
| Why not? |
| Mandarin, French, Spanish and in the order first. Placing French above Spanish only because there's only one option in the city right now- Stokes. |
| I would be super excited, I'm in Ward 7! Hopefully it would also offer a second language, such as French. |
W/O neighborhood preference to this charter, you could very well be hosed Ward 7...and your spot taken by someone from Upper NW. |
Nobody from upper NW is going to commute to Ward 7. I live in Ward 5 and would only consider Ward 7 if it were an extraordinary school. It would be great for those who live nearby, though! I'd love to see some interesting new charters in different wards. |
| Offering Japanese AND korean would be a draw. They are very similar. Share many similar words and sentence structure. |
| Arabic would be nice. |
| Second Arabic over Japanese. Huge need. |
Why ask? You have some data - look at the enrollment rates at the Hebrew language charter. |
