Eating out contributing to weight gain

Anonymous
For the past two months, I have tried to stay away from restaurant food and I have lost 5 pounds! I never realized how bad restaurant food is for you. I have been doing research on all the hidden calories-it really adds up! I cannot stay away from restaurants for the rest of my life though, obviously. Any tips for navigating restaurants and maintaining your weight?

Yes, I used to gain weight when eating out. Now, I don't eat bread or dessert and generally order a protein and veggie, requesting as little oil be used as possible, dressing on the side, etc. If I have a sweet tooth, I'll eat dark chocolate when I get home.

I always look up the nutrition info online if it is there. Then I make my meal choice.

You can order an appetizer as your main meal. I sometimes get a salad and app. I eat out all the time this way.

Yes! Most restaurant entrees have 700+ calories, plus a few hundred for drinks, and a few hundred if you get an appetizer - easily 1300 calories. It's insane.

Restaurant salads are calorie bombs.

Yeah this is a problem for me. When my now husband and I got serious, he insisted on taking care of dinner half of the time. He doesn't cook, so that want a lot of take out and 35 pounds for me. I'm still working on it, because he still does dinner about half of he time. And I used to do veggies and hummus or a smoothie or something like that often, now it's actual dinner. Sucks to be chubby.

Limit eating out to 1x per week. When you go out, enjoy it, but definitely keep dinging out to 1 meal per week.

Absolutely the best advice. The only thing I'd add is to focus on portion control when eating out. One can enjoy food without gorging.

If you eat out a lot (if you have to for business travel/meeting etc) I know someone who lost a ton by ordering the same way but cutting everything in half. Don't bring the leftovers home though. Toss them or wrap them and give them to a homeless person. ( I was living in NY at the time, and would occasionally do this while on WW. There was always someone at night on or near the subway)

Science is beginning to suggest you're wrong: http://www.amazon.com/Mindless-Eating-More-Than-Think/dp/0345526880/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1406412833&sr=1-1&keywords=brian+wansink
