And frankly, plenty of DTSS kids (SCES and HVES come to mind) are already being bussed past Blair to get to Northwood. The boundaries are going to be frustrating as long as they refuse to build inside the beltway. Prioritizing walkers cannot be the top criterion. |
Maybe. We don't even know the numbers since they never developed options to consider. And it may be moot if they won't allow kids to walk from one side of the Beltway to the other. |
It’s a huge issue for kids to get back and forth for activities and sports when there is no bus. |
Sounds like another reason in favor of maximizing walkers. |
| We live so close to Blair that we can clearly hear the sports announcements from our house. I don't care. My kid is at SSIMS whose building has been declared "untenable for learning." He is going to go to Northwood in all of its brand new school glory. He is in 7th right now, so the first year of all of this nonsense. Figuring it will be a mess no matter where he goes but it will all be better than SSIMS. |
Just where do you think that a new high school in downcounty can be built? There is no open land left. |
Walking is a nice concept. Too bad there are so many unsafe routes to school. |
I’m still disappointed they didn’t use the old Adventist health site. But this is also fair game for creative urban planning, if anyone was interested. |
There is land but the options sound like lunacy because the political will just isn't there. I can remember when there was real discussion about putting a high school at Takoma-Piney Branch Park and making the connected properties into a unified school/school athletics complex. Would have been crazy, and traffic/parking would have been a shit show, but also...just pull the trigger and solve some of the boundary distortions of having to ship a lot of these kids to Blair and Northwood. |
Where are you even from? Are you a SCES or Highland View family? I assume you're fine with your elementary school having split articulation to get your handful of streets assigned to Blair, since I can't imagine anyone would expect those elementary schools to be zoned to Blair in full, right? Also, are you seriously completely about a 10 minute bus ride being too long? Do you realize how long it takes for most kids to get to high school? If this is the level of inconvenience that has you up in arms, you must have a very charmed life... |
It’s not a 10 minute bus ride with stops. We are an 8-10 minute drive with traffic and the bus is 30-45 minutes as it varies with traffic. |
Our kids cross Conn, Georgia, Randolph, Viers Mill. |
But not the Beltway or 270. |
You cannot walk across the beltway and kids have been hit or killed on these roads. The only way to get across those is a walkway and that would be safe. |
Then I guess you can appreciate how bad the problem is down county and how this problem is far bigger than you and your family. We all need a closer in school. |
