Today Slate gives us yet another contender for worst article ever:
http://www.slate.com/articles/business/moneybox/2014/06/apply_to_law_school_now_yes_we_re_serious.html The arguments this writer gives us are so weak, and his own research so non-existent, that I actually feel kind of bad linking to this. It is literally just click bait, and I don't want to encourage that but SERIOUSLY? One of the commenters thoroughly refutes all of his points, which really isn't that hard to do. In summary, I disagree with this writer. Do not go to law school! |

Ha. What a dickhead.

| Also, BUY GOLD! |
| A lot of these type of articles will be paid for by a marketing groups. |
| I don't understand why so many bright people want to go to law school when they should go to med school instead. The PR machine better get to work on this so the next gen will be brainwashed to go to med school instead. |
|
I have heard of horror stories of Penn Law kids not getting jobs.
I don't think law school is a good idea these days unless you go to YHS or get 50%-100% tuition at CCN |
med school is a WAY WAY WAY WAY more difficult. so many weed-out classes in undergrad. MCAT is a lot tougher than LSAT (it actually tests domain knowledge it isn't as 'g-loaded' as lsat). There are half the amount of med schools in the country. If you are lucky enough to get into medschool, then you have 4 years of grinding and Boards (Step 2 being key) - that's your make/break to get into a residency which pretty much determines your career/field. After that, you have residency where you are paid like shit and work like a dog for 5+ years (for a specialist). Then you have to deal with shitty patients all the time. Even with all that - tons of people want to go to med school (med school acceptance rates are a lot lower than law school) already. It doesn't need a PR machine to make it more 'attractive' when the demand in relation to supply is even greater than law school already. |

"A lot of these type of articles will be paid for by a marketing groups."
Or AU law school, which is going to be desperate to fill that large new law school building they are putting up. |
where does AU place most of its grads? DC biglaw, doj, etc. are very elitist and even within the local market AU is behind GULC and GW. what's AU's value proposition? |
|
oh and before any smart-ass responds to the above question, your responses are only relevant if you were in the recruiting cycle post 2008 or are commenting on your firms recruiting (if you are on a hiring committee) post 2008.
Old-Economy Steve's not welcome. |
| The only people who should be going to law school are those who get into a top-ten school or get a free ride. Otherwise, do not bother. |
| Tons of boomers are cycling out of the law profession. This may be a bad moment to be graduating from law school, but it's an excellent time to be starting. This will be the last bad year and in three years law firms will be making record profits again. |
| ^^ Boomers are greedy and will never retire unless it benefits them to the detriment of others. |
along with what 22:13 said, I will add that medical school, although it has far better job prospects than law school (especially at the lower tier schools--i.e. if you graduate and pass your boards, you will be a doctor) still suffers from a lot of the issues with debt burden that people discuss when talking about law school. Medical school is also 4 years rather than 3 years, so that's an additional year of cost of living and tuition compared to law school (and there are no summer associate positions that pay 30K for 3 months). Then you need to be on a trainee's salary for residency for a few years after graduating. If you want to be a pediatrician or a general practitioner, you won't be making those crazy salaries that specialists make, and it can be hard to service 350K worth of debt on a low six figure job. |
I know a couple 2012 AU law grads doing doc review. Not exactly a representative sample, I realize. |
