Our teachers have 10 days of leave across the year, 8 sick and 2 personal, but the sick days can only be taken when you are sick or have another emergency.
But teachers are people. They have kids that graduate college, and nieces and nephews that get married, and dying grandparents they want to go see, and none of these things schedule themselves around Spring Break. |

Sick days rollover, so it is possible for a teacher to have more than 2 weeks. Sick leave is also used for maternity leave. So you can only imagine how much one must have accumulated. |

Many schools don't let you roll over your sick leave. When I adopted my child, I got 7.5 days of paid leave, because the school I was at allowed 8 sick days a year with no roll over, and I had taken a half day to get homestudy requirements done. The same school offered 6 weeks at partial pay under short term disability, but only if you gave birth. I should note that I had been at that school for 4 years, and had never taken a sick day except for that one half day. |

Yes, but she doesn't get winter break, spring break, federal holidays and summer vacation!
Our kids' teachers have taken so many vacations this year. They have had subs for so many reasons and for so many days. I think it is irresponsible for teachers to be allowed to take planned vacations (as opposed to emergencies, family illness...) during school days. |
This whole story is horrible. I'm sorry your school system treat you and their other employees so badly. |
Our pediatrician sure does! She closes her office (private practice) whenever her kids are off school during the school year and for 3 weeks in the summer. Inconvenient for me? Sure. Am I jealous that she can do? Yep, that, too. If your child's administrator felt he or she was shirking her duties due to too many days off, the principal didn't have to approve the vacation days. |
"Off for vacation" does not necessarily mean the teacher is no vacation. The school is not obligated to tell the students that the teacher's mother is sick, her grandmother just died, or her brother is getting married. "Off for vacation" may simply mean she will be out for some time. Sick days would not cover vacation time. In many situations a substitute for a few days is fine. All they have to do is provide work that the teacher has left behind based on what has been or will be covered. |
Please tell us which school system you are in. I've worked in several here in NoVa, and I've never seen "Use or lose" sick leave. (Personal, yes, but not sick.) Why would a system want to encourage teachers to use up days just because they can? They'd much rather allow the teachers to accumulate them just in case of long-term illness. And many teachers do just that. |
My doctors take winter, spring and federal holidays as well. And yes, they do take time off during the summer. Hell, my hairdresser does that as well. And don't let an out of town relative get married. The shop is closed down for the week. |
