Can anyone tell me the reason why teachers can take leave for vacation during school year?

You guys need to switch doctors!

Because like teachers, doctors don't deserve family life.

Our kids' teachers have taken so many vacations this year. They have had subs for so many reasons and for so many days. I think it is irresponsible for teachers to be allowed to take planned vacations (as opposed to emergencies, family illness...) during school days.

Teachers work darn hard for a pittance of a salary. If you treat them like indentured servants then you are just trying to guarantee that no one with decent teaching skills will want to teach school. If they were paid a reasonable salary, this might not be such an issue, but they are one of the lowest paid professions and your attitude is toxic for retaining decent skilled teachers.

Fairfax County teachers earn approximately 13 days of leave a year. Of those, 3 per year can be used for personal leave. Any unused leave carries over as leave, but only up to 3 per year are supposed to be used for personal.

I have almost 1,000 hours saved. I'm thinking I should start using some of it.

But the students aren't suppose to miss school for an uncle's wedding or cousin's college graduation.

The teacher may be taking leave without pay. Or, like someone said, have a special occasion. Or, she may be ill. As far as teachers taking days off, subs are used for training days for teachers.

Dumbass, students and teachers aren't the same. Teaching is a job like any other job. Home school if you don't like it.

But they do...or they add a week prior to spring break to go to France, and ask the teacher for all of the homework the day before they leave...

First of all, teachers and students are not the same. My boss can do lots of things I cannot.

Secondly, students DO take time off for those types of events and they are excused absences. In many cases they are excused in advance and students are given work before they leave to cover what they will miss.

In 21 years, I've never heard of a student not being able to take off for a wedding, or graduation...or cruise, parent's promotion, trip to Disney, etc.

OP, the students and parents aren't entitled to know why a teacher is away. Besides that, you say you've "heard" they get this time.

Just because there's a sub in the room doesn't mean the teacher is on vacation.

+1

Students definitely take off for more than sick days. I'm a teacher and I've taken myown kids out of school for graduations and travel.

HOPEFULLY something rather important, like home repair issue, wedding, funeral, doctor appointment.

Why would I switch doctors? Their vacation time is blacked out. Therefore, they simply don't schedule patients during those times. It's not as if I go for my appointment and find a "Gone Fishing" sign on the door. In the event of unforeseen emergencies, you can see another doctor. That's never happened to me, but my pediatrician has sent his patients to a different doctor during his vacation times.

Because despite what most people think, they don't actually get the entire summer off work.
