University of Florida should be ahead of UNC. Really smart kids are choosing UF.

A lot of ignorant people seem to believe US News is some kind of official government organization, when in reality it is a defunct news magazine trolling for clicks.

Because for some reason something called USNWR ignores test blind which is laughable. Forbes doesn't even consider UC in Public Ivies because of it.

So Forbes is the authority now. In any case, in top colleges 2026 list, Berkeley is ranked #5 and UCLA#15.

The petition includes signatures from Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna and Fields medalist Richard Borcherds, both UC Berkeley faculty, and is accompanied by an open letter that describes “severe” gaps in preparation, more time spent on prerequisite material, needing to reteach middle school mathematics concepts and risk of degree incompletion.

UF is a pretty easy admit for OOS students. It's on par with Wisconsin, Ohio State, UMD, VT.

Difficulty of admission is not the same as quality, no matter how many naive people think so.

The non-STEM kids getting into Berkeley from my DC’s OOS school are NOT top students. Literally can’t get in anywhere else in the top 50. One classmate was going to a regionally ranked school (not even USNWR national university) and got in off the waitlist. Think App State. Rejected at our state flagship. Test score is in the mid-1200s as shown on Naviance. It must be the essays getting these very average kids accepted. I think the ranking must be based on their old reputation.

Why intentionally make false claims? What do gain from this?

UF rate of acceptance of OOS applicants is 1/4 what is at the other schools you mentioned …

Looking at US News, you'd think William & Mary and UC Merced are similar in caliber. Even though both high income AND Pell Grant students have a better chance of graduating from W&M and securing a better job. If you care about things like the preparation of incoming students (including SAT scores), average class size, student satisfaction and teaching quality (all things US News has eliminated or downgraded), then you should look elsewhere for ratings and rankings.

Some of the non-STEM kids going to UChicago or Tufts from my kid's school are not great students either. They have Gpas of 3.6 but they are full pay and applying ED0 (Chicago only) or ED1. Many of these kids dont high rigor either.

That's like saying price is not the same thing as value but the two are not unrelated.
