Why do you need to know?

Probably because FCPS is taking off for a Jewish religious holiday.

Doesn’t answer the question. Unless your point is minorities should be treated differently?

Unless of course you’re willing to move Christmas break and Easter Break so we’re not all stuck with those exact weeks off across the country and then you can stay home for a religious observance?

Christmas is a federal holiday and one of the first federal holidays. It has been a major cultural and religious holiday in the United States since our founding. It is celebrated in some form by the vast majority of Americans.

No one reasonable goes to another country and demands that the country ditch its primary cultural traditions. This is a completely unserious statement.

Easter Holy Week is tied to spring break because that is what all the other public schools in northern Virginia do. Fcps tried to untie it, but it wrecked havok on childcare for teachers so FCPS moved it back to Easter Holy Week.

Fyi, the Catholic and Christian private schools don't attach spring break to Easter Holy Week. It is religiously inappropriate for a fun party vacation week to occur over Holy Week. Christians view Holy Week as a sombre time of sacrifice, prayer and reflection, not a fun beach and Disneyworld week. For Christians, separating spring break from Easter Holy Week would be preferred.

Tying spring break to Easter Holy Week is a purely secular decision from secular non Christians or non practicing Christians who don't understand Holy Week or Christianity.

Since Christmas is off federally anyway, we really have no reason to tie the entire country to having to be off at the same time.

You realize Christianity is not native to this country right? Y'all didn’t just come here and ask it be respected, you slaughtered the natives and decimated their religions.

Yeah, you would have less than 20% of the students attending school that week of Christmas to New Year, and even fewer teachers and staff. Nice try

Why? They’d have a break the week or 2 before. They can travel that week.

It’s Thursday.

Surely it’s FCPS that they don’t know what day it is. 😆

FCPS gives Day of the Dead/All Saints Day off. (Nov 1)

That one is a complete head scratcher. Catholics (and Mexicans) do not view that as a day to take off work or school. All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation, but you don't take off work or school to meet the obligation. You simply go to Mass in the early morning or to one of the many evening Mass options. All Saints Day is not a particularly huge feast day accompanied by a bunch of significant religious and cultural traditions that require one to take off work and school.

Giving All Saints Day/ day of the dead off as a religious cultural holiday is performative and shows that FCPS doesn’t understand the holiday.

November 1 is not a day off.

That’s because it’s a Saturday. The holiday is still listed because it’s always off when it’s not on a weekend. They plan the end of the quarter around it so it’s always a 4 day break.

Exactly.

But if you ask any Catholic, practicing Cathokic or just culturally catholic, they will tell you unequivocally that All Saints Day should not be a day off school.

All Catholics feel this way? Is this why schools in all of Italy and France shut down?

I’ve heard Catholics upset when it wasn’t off because their church only had morning services.

I think maybe some people within a religion may have differing thoughts.

Not sure what the schools in France or Italy have to do with FCPS.

I guess you didn’t see the comment I was replying to. So here ya go:

“But if you ask any Catholic, practicing Cathokic or just culturally catholic, they will tell you unequivocally that All Saints Day should not be a day off school.”

Just responding to this absolute falsehood. Catholics all around the world take the day off. There’s way more countries all over Europe and South America where all schools close for catholic observance of the day.

Maybe white bread yuppie Catholics in NOVA sit it out, but they don’t speak for all.

And to go a step further, maybe you’ve noticed we have a high population in of South American catholic students?

I read your comment and it's still irrelevant. I'm sure many countries take varying religious and other holidays off. It's irrelevant to an American school system.

And no I haven't noticed we have a lot of South American Catholic students. How would anyone know that?

Aaand...

We are in the USA.

American Catholics, whether devout Catholics or cultural catholics, do not take off for All Saints Day.

Your argument is irrelevant.

It has been on past calenders.

I’ve worked in FCPS for 25 years. I promise that All Saints Day has never been a religious holiday. If there was no school that day, it’s because it was a weekend or a teacher workday.

The calender lists it as All Saints Day/ Day of the Dead, so FCPS acknowleges the day off as a religious holiday.

Is FCPS in Italy or France?

Every Catholic church in this area has evening Mass for holy days of obligation, or another church 15 minutes away with evening Mass.

On most holy days of obligation, including All Saints Day, Catholics can find Mass to attend within 15-20 minutes in any direction at some combination of 6:00 AM, 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM, noon, 3:00 PM, 5:00 PM, 6:00 PM, 7:00 Pm, or a vigil Mass the night before at 7:00 PM.

So we have established you chose to live in a diverse area, but you pay no attention to those around you. Apparently you’re catholic enough to speak for them all, but don’t look at who sits near you in church.

And you throw a fit if you’re not the center of every day off.

Real winner there, white bread.

So we have established you chose to live in a diverse area, but you pay no attention to those around you. Apparently you’re catholic enough to speak for them all, but don’t look at who sits near you in church.

And you throw a fit if you’re not the center of every day off.

Real winner there, white bread.

The only thing we've established is that you're not Catholic, and no American Catholics are asking for All Saints Day to be a public school holiday.

The rest of your comment is bunk.

Hindus are around the same percentage (diwali off)

Orthodox Christians are a much tinier group. Are they even 1%? Yet we have Orthodox Epiphany off (Jan 17) and Orthodox Easter off (April 10)

None of these religious holidays needed to be added. There was no operational justification for any of them.

I thought that was why they created the O days. So kids who need a day off to observe a religious holiday wouldn't miss anything at school. I don't know why today isn't an O day. The calendar has gotten out of control.

Exactly - can someone explain how they differentiate between which religious events get full day off versus designated as O day?

Sounds like discrimination.
