How can we prepare our children for the coming storm?

I can promise you that in most places in the country, NO ONE is thinking about or caring about the changes happening. They don't think about politics at all. And if they do, they hear about wasteful government bureaucracy being dismantled in Washington and think, "good," then go about their lives.

They don't care that malaria care is being cut in Uganda. They are happy that their state and local school district will have more control over what is taught. They voted for a guy who said he would install judges to overturn Roe v. Wade, and they got what they asked for.

You might not agree with these choices, but they aren't any less American than you are. It's called a correction. The pendulum swung too far in one direction, and now it is swinging back. I don't necessarily agree with all of it, but I also haven't wrapped myself in tinfoil awaiting Armageddon. That is my recommendation.

Look, I am a right-leaning independent who voted for Trump in 2016. What is currently happening is terrifying because it is ILLEGAL. The president has no authority to close an agency or stop allocated money from reaching its target. These are under the purview of Congress. This is basic 7th grade civics division of branches stuff. And Musk has no security clearance or authority to do most of what he’s doing. It’s not about reducing waste and spending. It’s about trampling the constitution and compromising national security.

I appreciate the thoughtful response, and I think you and I have a different understanding of the branches of government. Yes, Congress funds federal agencies, but they sit under the purview of the Administration -- which is led by the president.

I'm not sure if it is illegal to shutter the DOE, or USAID. I genuinely don't know, but it sounds like any president would be within his rights to take this kind of action. As for Musk, he was appointed by the president, he has a security clearance OF COURSE given his national defense ties, and so yes, he does have the authority to do what he's doing, all at the pleasure of the president. Again, folks might not like it, but the "No one elected Elon Musk" rally seemed so ridiculously misguided it could almost make you laugh. Every single person who works at the White House in charge of crafting policy and priorities is unelected but for two people. That doesn't make their work illegal.

It "sounds like"? No. You are wrong. We are supposed to have three CO-EQUAL branches of government. The President cannot reverse enacted legislation on a whim.
Just take the L. You are ignorance personified.

The President is the head of the Executive Branch, he can do whatever the hell he wants in the branch. Your ignorance doesn’t change that fact.

This comment here illustrates the stakes, and why OP's storm language isn't hyperbolic. The President traditionally at least isn't able to "do whatever he wants" within the executive branch. The president has to execute laws passed by Congress, indeed the Constitution requires that through the take care clause. Congress can, and always has, directed that the executive branch have certain departments and offices. A law creating what is today the State Department was the fourth law passed by the first Congress. George Washington couldn't have decided not to have a State Department. That's part of how our system of separation of powers works.

Trump is trying to break that. Trying to test and see how much authority the courts will let him have to bypass Congress. This has been the way things are trending for a while, but Trump is that trend on steroids. It might break the system. We might lose real separation of powers and have one man rule. I hope not, but the number of people who believe, like you, that the president can do whatever he wants doesn't make me sanguine.

If you have girls, stock up on pregnancy tests and Plan B. Even if they are still young. The most deplorable people in this country are now emboldened, and there is a greater chance of your girls becoming victims. Don’t let them use period tracking apps.

But also, make sure they realize there is more to this country than our national politics. It is still a beautiful and diverse country, both landscape and people. If you have a good community, get involved so that they can take pride and comfort in their immediate surroundings.

Keep life as normal as possible for them. If they are young, don’t listen to the news around them. If they are teens, don’t obsess over it in front of them but have discussions. Make sure they have critical thinking skills, understand cause and effect, and can understand the complexity of a situation. Simplistic thinking is what got us here (ex. eggs expensive=Biden bad).

Ignore the posters who say you are being dramatic. You aren’t.

Best of luck to you and yours, op!

Cope.

Do I sound panicked? It is because I am!!

How about you teach your daughters to not sleep with random men? The easy solution is to wait until marriage

You do know sexual assault is a thing, right?

Also, I’m a married woman, and I would likely die if I ever got pregnant again. Married women need Plan B and birth control as well.

The majority of rape come from non whites FYI

I thought you people were trying to prevent more brown babies though?

Get rid of the people more likely to rape so your daughter doesn't get raped? That's like changing the moldy carpet instead of fixing the hole in the roof

Don't tell your kids so as not to instill fear or a sense of instability, but do i just in case.
Too late.

If you agree with most women on this forum, your kids already know you’re mentally unstable and will probably leave home to get away from you ASAP.

Big talk from someone living in his mom's basement.
We don’t have basements in Louisiana. And myself and my MAGA mother both have lovely homes. Thanks.

Isn’t it time for your anti-psychotic meds?

Do you still co-sleep?

Yes, he hasn’t weaned yet.

Why no answer to this? Don't tell me you haven't found a woman to procreate with you??! How can this be with your natural charm and intelligence?

Are you trying in person?

Is it safe to mail passport in for renewal? Mine is good but expiring next year. I’m afraid to send it away.
They are currently seizing and canceling all passports of people who voted for Biden or Kamala, or are registered as a Democrat.

They are going to round us all up and send us to MAGA camps for reeducation. This is the truth. Flee to Mexico now if you can! Hurry!
