The snow totals were just increased this morning. It’s not going to stop snowing until Monday afternoon. You seriously think the roads will be plowed enough by Wednesday morning to go back to school on Wednesday? Clearly you’re not from this area.

OK…you are assuming we get that much snow. I agree, if we get 8-12 inches, we will be closed past Tuesday. But I predict that we will get less, and kids will be back on Wednesday, with a delay for Wednesday and Thursday for cold. Maybe a longer delay or closure for Thursday? It looks pretty cold at the morning bus stops even with a 2 hour delay.

Chuck Bell on NBC4 is staying with 5-8” due to sleet mixing in.

He must mean for TONIGHT because no other weather entity I’ve seen is predicting that low for the total. It’s a 24 hour event. If he’s saying that’s the total for Sunday and Monday he’s a huge outlier.

Did CWG change their tune? Because this was exactly what they were saying with 10-12 being the boom range.

CWG went from 5-8 to 6-10 this morning.

Any sleet would come after the primary batch of precipitation, so it wouldn't cut down the totals. Fairfax County is in line for 8" plus or minus a couple. Pretty good consensus at this point if you toss the outlier models.

At all? Nah they’ll be back in by Thursday for sure with Wednesday a 50/50. But Monday and Tuesday are a lock.

If we get 10-12 inches we will be closed for the week. It’s not going to break freezing and you can’t move that much snow easily the plows just end up blocking everything and neighborhoods will be last. The main roads will be fine by Wednesday but not the neighborhoods/walkways.

They’re not going to close school for a week for a foot of snow. That’s insane

Don’t underestimate how long it takes the plows to get to neighborhood streets. It could literally be mid-week.

Arlington public schools just announced closure for Monday.

If the snow does not melt on its own then they will close schools for 3-5 days here with a foot of snow. The issue is that there is a lack of plows to clear most areas in a timely fashion. Toss in melted snow turning into ice on the sidewalks and roads and you will have schools closed for a longer period of time than you would further north or in the mid-west. This area doesn’t get snow frequently enough to know how to handle any amount with a degree of safety. It is kind of like Southern California when they get rain, utter chaos on the streets.

Yeah, widespread melting is not much of a possibility this week. The high temp will be on Tuesday at 34 degrees. Plan for the worst. Hope for the best.

Alexandria too.

I’m sorry that all the parents who hate their kids will have to spend another day or two with them.

The problem is that the temperatures this week won't get above freezing, at all, until next weekend. So whatever snow doesn't get plowed within a day is just going to get compacted down into sheets of ice, and plows on Wednesday or beyond will be useless. Guarantee we're going to be hearing about ice-covered side streets and sidewalks on Wednesday and Thursday. That's far worse for driving than light fluffy snow.

We still have ice on our road from Friday. I know it’s not even close to being the norm, but because of the slope and lack of sun it gets very icy and stays that way. Imagine what 8+ inches of snow does.
