Wizards and Caps could be moving to Potomac Yard

Well the Mayor of Alexandria certainly is happy about this. Kind of builds of his incredible disdain for public input.

Also typical of Alexandria to pretend as if this is a 2B investment as opposed to a 2B giveaway from Alexandria and Virginia taxpayers.

It must really burn to see him score a win in a bi-partisan fashion. It really goes against everything you’ve been hoping he’d be.

Too bad he can't win elections in his state.

Except the election that he actually ran in. You know, the one that made him “Governor Youngkin” and made Terry a retiree.

I don't know who is going to turn things around here. There is no deep base of qualified people to run. The current leadership are out of ideas or are actively making things worse.

Rush hour traffic is already a pain. Caps games draw about 18,000 fans. Figure that translates to at least a couple thousand more cars coming through that area at peak rush hour for a 7 pm game. Just not very appealing for me - I'd much rather take the metro downtown.

Fans would be going into the city instead of leaving it. It would be counter to rush hour traffic flow.

While some are complaining about traffic and the democratic socialist crowd are ranting about corporate interests, it's undeniable that Amazon and this new sports/entertainment complex and the new VT campus are huge for NoVA and something DC with high crime, anti-business policies and declining schools could not compete with.

VA residents have been attending Caps and Wizards games for decades. Sorry. The only people losing if the move were to happen will be MD residents.

Because it is in the middle of the region. Asking people from Gaithersberg or Columbia to maintain their season tickets to get to Potomac Yard 40+ night s year is a lot to ask.

The idea that MD based fans will keep attending Caps games at PY is absurd. Hockey is booming in the MD inner and outer burbs. The likelihood that we would attend a weekday game with our hockey playing children at PY is nil.

I'm a Caps fan living in MD and I'll go to Potomac Yard with my kids, one of whom plays hockey in MoCo.

You need to dial down the drama a few dozen notches.

Doubt it. 730 pm Wednesday night game. Not happening.

Tons of fans from Virginia used to drive to Landover to see hockey and basketball on weeknights. For every Maryland fan lost in this move they'll pick up more from Virginia.

Traffic on the beltway in the 1970's is not the same as traffic on Rt 1 in 2020's. And it is already a cluster on Rt 1 right now. The arena is going to make evening rush untenable.

Different traffic and demographic patterns then. Fans aren't making the trek out to raljohn like they used to and you are underestimating how bad that stretch is

I don't think you are correct. They'll pick up enough exurban Virginia fans to make it cost effective but it won't be accretive. They are reducing demand in exchange for lower costs and ancillary revenue streams.

Good luck recovering that part of the fanbase, Ted.

And personally, I have been a season ticket Caps supporter since the last year of US Airways Arena/capital centre (I bought them because they were moving downtown) and will not renew. Most of the people who sit around me have also said they will not renew.

Sad day.

You'll forfeit something you enjoyed for decades because it moved....3 miles away?

Umm, OK, bro. Go ahead and cut your nose off to spite your face.

Poster is right. This Caps will not be attending games in PY. I tend to drive to games, and have had very few issues. PY is not remotely attractive.

You don’t think you’ll want to park in the underground garages they’ll build?

Parking is not the issue. Time and traffic are. You may not be familiar with the awful traffic nearby PY. [Will parking be free?]

No lessons being learned in DC. Congrats, NoVA.

Yeah isn't it not terrible because you could take the GW Parkway.

GW Parkway is an absolute nightmare right now.

LOL, they will charge $50 per car. Free, that is the one cash cow Ted doesn't make right now.

And they won't be able to get a direct access from the GW Parkway into this area, so all of the cars are going to have to use Rt 1, which is already a gridlock nightmare.

Those pretty renderings show empty streets. The reality is very different and will be made worse.

The impact of the decline in quality of life in Chinatown cannot be discounted. If Leonsis was there in person daily and on game days, he saw it. He tried to change it and raise awareness with DC leaders. Why not go somewhere that is not filthy and menacing? He talked about his employees being physically attacked. He hired off duty MPD for security. DC? Not sure they mustered the energy to even shrug at his concerns. And if they don't care about the revenue generating folks with a microphone, spoiler, they don't care what the rest of the tax paying rather than consuming residents think either. The new project looks great, I look forward to visiting, bringing the kids and not feeling on high alert.

Governor Youngkin just became Senator Youngkin with this. The only thing that would poison this is if he can't fend off the demand for so-called "affordable" housing that would spike costs and bring gang-related crime to the area. But I think President Trump will be able to stop that nonsense given Governor Youngkin standing down from the presidential race this year.

+1

People who don’t think it’s going to be (more of) a massive clusterfvk don’t drive on GW Pkwy or Rt 1.

Guess Youngkin doesn’t care how it actually impact NoVA since he’ll be long gone.
