An elementary school of 900 students is not unreasonable. It is not a problem as long as staff is appropriate and space is adequate. And, it is not overwhelming for small children as they are not roaming the halls. signed: former Kindergarten teacher |
The average elementary school size is 479 students. Looks like we have another lying activist trying to gaslight parents once again. |
Wow. Definitely not an activist. Just a former teacher with experience in three school-not including Fairfax county where I live now. The smallest had over 400 students and the other two were close to 1000. When I taught in the school with the smallest population, it was a much older neighborhood and there were empty classrooms. It was an older school, and I suspect it once had a lot more students than when I was there. Do you understand what "average" means? It pretty much means that half are above that and half below that. Do you know that there are rural schools that are still pretty much one room school houses? Let's apply just a little common sense here--I happen to live in a neighborhood with 1000 homes--all walkable to the elementary school. An adjacent neighborhood (mostly walkable) has about that many homes, as well. Lots of young families. Can you do the math? Now, if you live in an area with houses on very large lots and spread out over miles, the schools are likely to be a little smaller. And, if you live in a rural area, they are likely to be much, much smaller. |
p.s. anytime anyone uses "lying" in their post, it makes one wonder who the "activist" is... |
You described the median, not the mean (average). For a former teacher you are misinformed. In any event even if one were to assume the median size for an ES in the county was 900 kids it wouldn’t mean that was ideal, only that schools are big. You definitely seem like an apologist for Karl Frisch, who has been a terrible School Board member and was ready to leave his seat on the board vacant before he got defeated in a primary for the House of Delegates. It’s only because he has no sense of shame whatsoever that he’s crawled back and asked for another term on the School Board (not because he cares about education - he doesn’t even have a college degree - but because it may well be his primary source of income). |
Oh. So sorry. I stand corrected on average vs mean. But, face it, it works either way. And, I am absolutely not an apologist for Karl Frisch. I would never support him--or, for that matter, anyone currently on the School Board. Most of what I know about him was what I read about him "saving" the dog park at the expense of kids. However, I stand by my comment about school size. You are not going to find many areas of FCPS where the neighborhood lends itself to smaller elementary schools. And, FWIW, I will likely support the GOP endorsed candidates for SB and will vote against my current SB member who is running for higher offiice. But, size of elementary schools is not the issue that concerns me. Class size is the important issue. |
| question: Why does our SB have a resolution at this week's meeting honoring a religion? |
If you read the resolution, they aren't honoring the religion, but instead the contribution of Muslim Americans, and expressing their continued opposition to Islamophobia. If they spoke out against anti-Semitism, would you imply they are somehow making Judaism the official religion of Fairfax County? It's these types of fake questions from the far right that make it more likely that the next School Board will again be 12-0 Democratic, which is not a good thing but may yet be an inevitable one. |
March 30, they honored Arab Americans." When are they going to honor Christian Americans? You know the ones who wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and their contribution to our society? Have they honored Jewish Americans? |
Or Hindu Americans? Buddhist Americans? |
This is really how the GOP activists think they are going to win seats this fall? Complaining about not paying enough attention to Christians in the United States? You never learn and you WILL get slaughtered at the polls again. |
+1 |
Arab American is not a religion. |
Yes |
|
They also plan to honor Holocaust victims at the May 27th Board meeting according to the latest meeting calendar.
I'm less concerned with resolutions to honor different groups than with the fact that every single Board member seems to feel obliged to speak to each resolution or recognition. It drags things out and then they don't get around to their real business until many people have retired for the night. And even then they ignore things that people would have liked to have heard discussed during prime time hours, such as academics and facilities. |
