Our elementary school canceled Halloween

At what point does the pumpkin become the Devil’s tool?

Where did pumpkins originate? Are they a native or invasive species? Were the seeds brought here by ship? What ship? Who was the captain and what was the mission of his voyage? How did his arrival, with the pumpkin seeds, affect society? For better or for worse? All this must known before we can proceed.

This board has some crazies so it’ll be a good barometer for your question. I think you’ll hear that pumpkins aren’t equitable and/or are the devils’s work, so they need to be banned regardless.

This county has some crazies!

To answer the PP, the pumpkins would all need to be the exact same size in order to be equitable.

If my kid was in one of these no costumes on Halloween schools, I’d send him in one of those sweat shirts/pants that look like a skeleton (or similar) that is an outfit, but costume-ish just to flout the rules. And send in candy with his lunch. I’d explain that some people are trying to force their religious beliefs on us, but that he can still acknowledge Halloween on the day of if he’d like because we don’t have to abide by other’s beliefs.

Why not pack an over the top benzo box with Pinterest-worthy Halloween food?

Oh that would be fun too! I will probably do something like that this year.

You should all pull your kids out of school on Halloween. Three quarters of the students out on the same day. Let the system feel the effects of that for a few years. See if they reinstate Halloween since so many students are adversely affected by its absence. I would totally, 100% do that if my kids were still in ES. Would not hesitate.

I’d be willing to do it if I thought it would make a difference. I mean, why would MCPS care if my kid was absent? I feel like they’d be happy to have him absent. Fewer kids to worry about.

You know Halloween is celebrated at night, right?

My mom was on the extreme side of extreme, she would also pull me out of a fall festival because in her pov it’s just Halloween with a different name.

What religion? What ethnicity? Where did you grow up?

I’m surprised this is such a big issue in mcps beyond newcomers. I have family in TX who are surrounded by Latinos who celebrate Halloween, but they aren’t newcomers—they are 2nd or 3rd generation.

I posted in the first few pages. I’m Latina and my parents were extreme Evangelists as in not cutting your hair and no pants variety. The majority of Latinos celebrated Halloween just not The extreme branches of Christianity. my family immigrated here when I was two, I grew up in Silver Spring and went to MCPS. I said in the first pages and I’ll say it again, I don’t think the county should bow down and conform to religious extremism. Frankly, I see that as dangerous.

Although they have changed over the years, my parents opposed any LGBT books, sex Ed (I was also pulled out for this), any books about magic (no Harry Potter for me), school dances. The list goes on and on!

When majority of the community is for celebrating Halloween, why do principals hide behind a few irrational people to make this kind of decision? Needless to say, our elementary community is livid. Is there anyway we can change the principal’s mind at this point?

Ours is having a parade
