How selective is UNC Chapel Hill for out-of-staters?

Anonymous
What schools would you compare it to in terms of selectivity? (It is hard to parse out the statistics for out of state vs. in state.)

It's selective because the % of OOS students is quite low. Based on admissions at my DCs school this year it seemed a small notch below UVA, similar to Wake, Michigan, USC, etc.

Is your DC at a private or public? If public, are you in VA, MD or DC?

Thank you.

UNC is more selective than any of those schools for OOS students. More selective than Vanderbilt or Emory.

Top 25ish publics appeal to a far broader spectrum of applicants and are therefore fore selective even when ranked lower.

I've read that it's harder to get into than Harvard from out of state. Only 18% of admissions are dedicated to out of state applications.

Percentage wise maybe, but my DC had friends accepted at UNC and not at some of those others. I think UNC draws a broader range of applicants so numbers don't tell the whole story.

North Carolina has one of the worst public school systems in the country. Unc is forced to accept 82% in state . Out of state is difficult because of this . The school population as a whole is average and the revelation that the school has graduated decades of illiterate athletes shows the subjective standards. The school has zero Nobel , fields medal or academy award alumni. I think they have 8 Pulitzer alumni but minimal Emmy alumni .

The most accomplished alumni in recent times are basketball and football players.

In case you've missed it, the Nobel Prize is a bit a joke these days and Academy Awards and Emmys? Really?

Academy and Emmy awards are the peak of liberal arts awards other than pulitzers. Unc is a liberal arts school.

And judging from the high number of illiterate athletes with degrees, there is an emphasis on Arts.

Perhaps you should share your "research" with US News because they somehow think that UNC is a Top 30 National University and Top 10 public university.
