You know, I wonder how much compassion people would be imploring us to have if she were a lower middle class overweight 47 year old with snaggle teeth instead of an attractive fit 36 year old wealthy woman?

Exactly

First, off-topic. Second, Britney has schizophrenia.

She’s starting to sound like Lori Laughlin who has all but ruined her career with her arrogance and refusal to accept responsibility for her actions.

Well Hillary might have schizophrenia too

One of the best comments of this whole saga that I just saw over on Reddit:

I've swum in the ocean off the coast of Florida yearly. I'm a manatee.

There was a segment on Fox 5 local news last night in which a psychiatrist weighed in. He didn't mention serious mental illness but said people usually lie about their background for a couple of reasons, including gaining favor with a love interest, gaining opportunities, etc.

She shows no signs, Moving on...

The sad thing is she is causing harm...

There are other mentally ill women who see her images on IG and assume they too should be underweight, sexy and with the kids all the time. Anyone who has tried doing 10 minutes of yoga with toddlers awake and under your care knows it's an accident waiting to happen. She needs to explain there are nannies 2 feet away ready to grab them and prevent accidents.

She profited off the exotic Spanish woman shtick and the more it boosted her career, the more credibility it gave her to mentally ill women who cannot see through the ruse. I wonder how many people with EDs got re-triggered by her lingerie posts. I wonder how many woman had to take a kid to the ER because they thought it was perfectly reasonable to do a workout in lingerie while the babies and puppies were frolicking about unsupervised.

And she might be a unicorn. It doesn't change what she did.

Anonymous wrote:My take is she and her family traveled to Spain quite a few times during her youth. She and her brother became infatuated with the culture, because that’s what happens to self hating Americans when they first travel abroad. Its just so much more sophisticated and interesting to be foreign, particularly a sexy hispanic, right? Well, she and maybe her brother transformed into pseudo Spanish people. The dad is obsessed with Spain too, but admits he isn’t Spanish. It’s an odd family dynamic I am sure.

Slight correction: That's what happens to a few of your average white Americans. I think POC in America (black, Latino, Asian) and white immigrants/children of immigrants have more of a strong sense of a specific identity, so aren't as likely to take on a different identity. I have both groups in my family, and no one is pretending to be something they're not because they can already point to a specific identity/country of origin.

Agree, self hating American would not include everyone, it it would be the “self hating” ones. Also, if you’re born here you should identify first and foremost as an American. But for many what does that even look like? For Hilaria it must’ve looked very bland and boring from her perspective and many others. She wanted to be an objectified sexy hispanic for whatever reason. From her perspective that seemed more exciting and advantageous than being white Becky from next door. I guarantee she wouldn’t have bagged Alec Baldwin with the white Becky act.

I still can't believe a WASP is trying to be an immigrant. I am 2nd generation on 1 side and 3rd on the other and we were raised to try to be as WASPy as can be. Her parents were the epitome of what my parents wanted for us.

Okay, some of this is really a reach. If a parent decides to do yoga in lingerie while supervising little ones, that's on them, not Hilaria. I think she's a liar, and likely mentally ill, too, but this is too much. Likewise, skinny people are allowed to post pictures and are not responsible for triggering people with eating disorders.

It really is something else. My parents moved here and quickly lost their accents (from English-speaking countries). I'm married to a black immigrant who moved to the US as a teen and also worked to lose the accent to try to fit in. And here she is not just playing up but lying about this exotic immigrant schtick for her own benefit (bagging a rich guy and developing a profitable "brand").

Many people are trying to be something they are not, it’s not just Hilaria. Ironic because immigrants are trying to be more white or WASPY and white pilgrim descendants are trying to be more exotic. The American experiment is a mishmash of nonsense. Then you have some immigrants who never ever assimilate and have no desire to do so and the white nationalists who are insane. Hilaria is just a product of this ridiculous nation.

Spaniard from Spain here! News reached Spain on Twitter and it’s been really funny to follow the story!
I never heard from her until now, I didn’t know who she was, she wasn’t remotely relevant on Spain.
Things that I want to point out:
1) I don’t think she knows about our culture at all. Mallorca is a tourist place, where there are touristy places where no one is a local. There are many British and Germans who retire there and don’t know any word in Spanish after living in Spain for many years, they don’t tend to integrate or blend with the local community. What she talks about Spain are all stereotypes, I don’t follow her on social media, but has she talked about “Los Reyes Magos”? (The Three Wise Men), they give presents on January 6th (they’re our version of Santa Claus). If she names her children Spanish names (well, weird composed names not common here) you’d think she celebrates Spanish traditions as “Reyes Magos”, or the twelve grapes at New Years’ Eve (you eat 12 grapes on each clock bell strike at midnight).
2) Her brother wrote to her in Spanish being both Americans? Come on! And the Spanish was off, with common mistakes.
3) She never speaks more than two sentences in Spanish. Her accent is good, but her grammar and vocabulary is not, that’s why I think she avoided to talk with the Spanish press.
4) What I find most offensive of it all it’s not that she pretended to be Spanish, but that she portrayed an stereotype of “Latin” that has nothing to do with us. When I look at the way she makes up, for example, I think of a Latin girl, not a Spaniard from Spain. And I read some interviews full of stereotypes that are not even from our country. “Cielito lindo”! And she tanned and dyed her hair to look from Spain? Come on! That’s so offensive! Tell Elsa Pataky that she’s not Spanish because she’s blonde... argh.
5) No one in Spain is called Hilaria. It’s absurd.
6) A Spaniard wouldn’t give up her last name, it’s a cultural thing for us. We marry and keep our last name and we have two last names. Take Elsa Pataky, for example, she didn’t lost her last names when she married Chris Hemsworth. She’s Elsa (name) Lafuente (first surname, from her father) Medianu (second surname, from her mother). We don’t tend to have middle names (I don’t, for example, as most of my friends), so that’s even weirder that Hilaria names her children even three.
