My take is she and her family traveled to Spain quite a few times during her youth. She and her brother became infatuated with the culture, because that’s what happens to self hating Americans when they first travel abroad. Its just so much more sophisticated and interesting to be foreign, particularly a sexy hispanic, right? Well, she and maybe her brother transformed into pseudo Spanish people. The dad is obsessed with Spain too, but admits he isn’t Spanish. It’s an odd family dynamic I am sure.

Slight correction: That's what happens to a few of your average white Americans. I think POC in America (black, Latino, Asian) and white immigrants/children of immigrants have more of a strong sense of a specific identity, so aren't as likely to take on a different identity. I have both groups in my family, and no one is pretending to be something they're not because they can already point to a specific identity/country of origin.
