How to help MCPS' lowest performing students?

You are looking at about $4k a month in takehome income with no money from July to mid-September. Most unmarried teachers live paycheck to paycheck. That needs to cover housing (good luck!) student loans, food, etc.

When we do the math with high school students in class, everyone basically calculates that $80k is really the wage needed to live MoCo to account for all major and typical expenses.

It’s better than what county workers get paid. They can spread out their checks over 12 months and take summer jobs. This isn’t anything new. Many of us made that much or less starting out. We got roommates, carefully grocery shopped, etc. no different now.

It’s almost as if you’re creating a minimum wage for teachers so they make just enough money to scrape by living with roommates and with a diet of ramen noodles. This is why the quality of teachers entering the classrooms is declining. Yes, my parents discouraged me from going into education and yes, I am discouraging my own children. Compensation should align with the average individual income for residents in the county with the same years of experience and education level.

AND there is no reason to help everyone. As is AI will be doing many jobs that require well educated workers. So we need sheeples not people for the new world.

Most of these kids (if not all) simply don’t care, their parents don’t care, their siblings don’t care, and even their cats and dogs don’t care. I don’t know why we are wasting resources on them.

+1. Assign a social worker to cover each school to go chase the parents.

When I saw ES kids in the local playground at 10 PM on a school night, you know their parents just destroyed any hope of an academic future for them.

There are social workers but maybe not enough of them to chase each family that needs chasing.

Up until late elementary I think you can still inspire the kids to care. But after that it is very difficult. We should allow students to drop out at 15 or 16, and leave the rest of high school to those who want to be there.

You can't. Education is not valued by these parents and family - due to poverty, dysfunction, culture, language barrier etc. Parents themselves are ill-educated or uneducated. There is poverty and lot of neglect, abuse, abandonment of children. There is zero understanding of the value of education in the modern world and what opportunities it can make available for people.

This is the underclass population. And what needs to be done is to give them the training that can actually be of practical use to them for menial jobs that will not be taken over by AI.

They all are on their devices watching porn or playing games. LOL. Their reward centers in their brains is already rewarded.

Without the parents being on their case to study, they are not going to improve. BTW - this requires a lot of sacrifice from parents because they have to be present, vigilant and make sure that the kids are getting the help. Lots and lots of hours of making your kids study.
