Any Parents Privately Disappointed with College Placement?

Anonymous
Soon to be a so called Big 3 grad, DC has decided on a field that is not offered at HYP although DC could definitely compete for admission to any Ivy.

DC is quite okay with the available college choices for her interest. USC, UCLA, Berkeley, Michigan, and several others will meet DC's criteria. And we are alright with that. Safety school? U. of Illinois. And we are alright with that too.

Those who are so Ivy driven should get out more and explore some of the other excellent non-Ivy universities. They just might be pleasantly surprised of the offerings.

You can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need. Truer words were never spoken even if they did come from Mick J.

There's one or two STA grads going to Indiana as far as I know.

Some parents didn't come from a private school background and/or attended a large, public school themselves and hoped for a different outcome for their son. They may or may not have expected that as a STA graduate their son would attend a more prestigious college than they, perhaps in hindsight they're feeling right now that he could have had this college admission outcome after attending a public school.

Whoever you are, if you're a public school parent, like I am, can I just say that you're embarrassing the rest of us. Indiana is a fine choice and may have been the best fit for that kid(s).

Not a public school parent. If it was the best fit why is the STA parent stating they are disappointed. They just have different expectations and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm one of the PPs who said there's nothing disappointing about going to Indiana, and I would say that regardless of where the student went to HS. For the record, I'm a Sidwell parent. Please don't slam other schools in the name of defending Sidwell -- it just makes Sidwell look bad.

+1. Love it. All hail to Mick!

Man, you people know nothing. One of the guys going to Indiana is attempting to walk on to the football team (and is thrilled for the chance). Why would you opine about things you know nothing about?

Must be another parent disappointed that their STA kid is going to Indiana.

What does that even mean?

Apparently, this STA parent is privately disappointed with their son's college placement. Didn't the school's counselor tell you it's a great fit for your son and a wonderful school? The way everyone here from the community is raving, Indiana-Bloomington is brag worthy, why the letdown, PP?

Sounds like an STA parent who respects these kids as individuals and doesn't see them as window decals. (And I'm not an STA parent, BTW.)

09:31, is your U of I safety Urbana or Chicago? I attended the Chicago campus and had the advantage of an excellent education and the benefit of a world class city with museums, shopping, and affiliation with other excellent universities in the region (Northwestern, U of Chicago, Loyola, etc).

Oh, yes, if you go a bit farther south, you've got my parents alma mater, wonderful Indiana U-Bloomington which has been around for almost 200 years. They must be doing something right.

I know both students and families and they are excited about the choice. It works for what both the specific families/students want, including the possibility of one of the students playing Division I football in the Big Ten (which seems cool to me). These are students who had choices and liked their choice of IU.

Maybe there is another St. Albans parent posting on here, or maybe someone else not affiliated with St. Albans who saw the Commencement day newspaper day list of colleges, who knows.

I would say, and I know it's a bit preachy a day ahead of time (this is Saturday), that it's an odd conversation to fixate on college choices made by a couple specific kids, and it is unkind to use this anonymous forum as a way to denigrate those choices.
