Most of his friends from midrange non W MCPS public also got in (although not sure if FC or not, didn’t ask, didn’t tell). It must be somewhat of an advantage to come from a lower performing school? Maybe these kids went test optional but pretty sure they didn’t break 1300 and are in calculus now, senior year and only had a few APs. Mixed messages. I guess just count my blessings….

Usually 50% of those who apply get in from my kid’s W school. What percentage of kids get in from your non W school?

No idea what % but it seems like all but one of my kid and friends, so about 10, got in. Very unscientific but I was just surprised. One has low 1100 SATs, although maybe did not submit. She was Spring admit to Delaware but got into College Park?

I think there is a difference between the stats for the honors program versus the regular UMD program.

Lots of instate students with all kinds of GPA and SAT scores get into UMD. Very tippy top students get into Honors college for coveted majors like cs, engineering.

That can't be true.

Sorry, what is a a W/non W school? Thanks

It’s used as shorthand for the higher SES high schools in MCPS - Whitman, Wootton, Walter Johnson, Winston Churchill.

And Watkins Mill

LOL!!! This made me smile. I went to a school in the county similar to WM and laugh at the superiority complex of the typical W schools. Get over yourselves!

Total BS!

UMD admission comm has a deep knowledge of area public schools.

It depends on what major the candidate above applied to.

UMD is hard to get in some of the majors. Especially CS. Howard and Montgomery county schools are full of super high performing students and there are huge benefits of getting into UMD for the hard sciences at least.

DP... not to be mean, but for an IB student, 1440 and 4.2 WGPA are not very high stats. I would expect better numbers. But, yes, major also matters.

DP: Why? IB diploma is very rigorous and 1440 is 97th percentile. Why would you expect higher.

Because it is or should be a rigorous program, which means if the student managed to get the diploma (you have to pass all six IB exams), then they should have better test scores, period.

An IB student would be compared to other IB students, not the general student population.

This sounds completely wrong to me. I’d like to hear from an admissions counselor.

You know how Asian Am kids are compared to each other? IB kids from the same area are looked at as a group, and compared wthin the group.

If UMD looked at all MD students in one bucket, something like 80% (ok, maybe not 80% but some other ridiculously high numbeer) of the kids would be from MoCo . I heard a UMD admission officer say that.. "UMD is not the University of Montgomery County".. ie, we look at all MoCo students as a group, and compare the MCPS students with each other.

I don't know where ^^PP student is from but in MCPS IB program, 1440 would not be very high. It's below the median (1500), and many have a 3.8+ GPA, unweighted. You can imagine what their weighted GPA looks like.

If that ^^PP's kid is from MoCo, that's the type of scores that kid is competing with -- 1500+, 4.2+ GPA, weighted.

Maybe they are from a different county/state, but in MCPS, a lot of IB students usually have much higher scores/grades.

I'm not the person whose kid you are denigrating, but you are a pompous ass.

stating facts is now equal to being a pompous a$$? I got those numbers from the school website. Sorry it hurt your feelings. Or maybe we should all be telling alternate facts and numbers.

You got the 1500 as a median SAT for MoCo IB students from what school's website? From RM's? Obviously all MCPS students do not have a median score of 1500 on their SATs, so why does this applicant with 1440 get compared only to the 1500 median for some of the IB students? Do you work in UMCP admissions? And you're not hurting my feelings at all.

To add: MCPS website shows 1119 is the most recent mean SAT and highest in state. I do not find a median reported anywhere.

Maybe you need to re-read the entire thread... start from the very top... "IB diploma"... this student is an IB student, that's why I mentioned IB student scores.

I'm just a parent, and yes, my kid is in the IB program, and I am aware of some of their SAT scores through my kid.

.. because it was about IB, which the first poster stated "IB diploma", not all of MCPS.

Lemme get this straight: you quoted a 1500 SAT as median for the IB program, and it turns out you know "some SAT scores through your kid." That is not data. You seem to be intent on being unhelpful and you are making claims based on hearsay. Please get a hobby.

Tell me about Carillon community. What does it mean day-to-day?
DD got in (out of state) and deciding between U of Vermont and UMD College Park Carillon.
DD plans on elementary ed or maybe nursing. 3.8 and 34 ACT.

Np here - not sure if it’s being disputed but the (magnet) IB program at RM really does have median SAT scores of 1500. It’s on the IB school profile.
