Why hasn't Virginia adopted Common Core Standards?

Anonymous
Looking at the map on the Common Core site http://www.corestandards.org/standards-in-your-state/ I see that Virginia is among the few states that have not adopted the standards. Does anyone know why that is? Does Viginia have a plan to adopt Common Core in the near future? Is it the Viginia state legislature that makes the decision as to whether or not Virginia public schools follow Common Core?

Because Virginia's standards are higher. The SOLs (Standards of Learning assessments) have been in place 10+ years. The SOLs were used as a prototype for the development of the Common Core - at least this is what, in Virginia, we have been told.

I don't think it's a matter of Common Core or SOL. It's a matter of how the children are being taught in the schools today. Are they gaining those critical thinking, presentation, innovative and creative thinking, writing, independent research, and speaking skills that will help them in the future. That is the real issue. Many parents are not happy with the "teaching to the test" mentality and instruction, but at the same time, teachers are being held to those metrics. As a result, teachers do not necessarily have that same freewill to teach how they want to teach; rather, they teach to the test.

Yep

My brother called yesterday to ask me wtf regarding common core math. He's in MA

Agree with the fact that we need to teach and develop critical thinking skills. The problem is in testing for them. These methods and tests that I have seen for math are ridiculous. Good motives, sorry results.

Are you referring to Common Core or SOL?

I don't like either--but I think CC is worse. Have you seen some of the math?
