Pupil place at Lake Braddock instead of Woodson

Anonymous
My DS is an 8th grader at Frost MS AAP. Our base high school is Annandale. We want to pupil place for AP and the three area high schools that have AP are Woodson, Lake Braddock and Falls Church.

The closet school to our home is Woodson. We do not want to go to Woodson. How can we pupil place at Lake Braddock (2nd closest to our home) instead of Woodson?

Why don't you want to go to Woodson? That's an excellent school....I actually don't think I've ever heard anybody say that before.

We do not want to go to Woodson for personal reasons. Thanks.

You have to find a program that Lake Braddock has that Woodson does not, and it has to be the closest school that offers that program, then your child has to take that class. But the proximity thing is the one that you'll have to deal with once you find a program. Look at the languages - depending on where you live that might be an option. But LB has to be the closest school to your house per FCPS that offers that program.

Thank you. So if Lake Braddock has a language and AP we can opt for that instead of Woodson? The most important factor for us is AP and not language.

You need to move.

We love our neighborhood, home and commute. We would prefer pupil placement. Thanks.

Is your 9th grader going to take AP classes?

You can't use AP since there's a school that's closer to you that has AP. It has to be a program or class that is at a nearby school, and the school also needs to be open to transfers. We just went through this last year at another set of schools and couldn't make it work. It has to be a language or other program that's not offered at a school closer to you or Woodson. You should call the FCPS pupil placement office and talk to them - they were very helpful when we tried to make this work.

Lake Braddock offers Japanese classes and Woodson does not.

Is it worth that much to you?

To transfer for that reason, your child would need to take Japanese beginning with 9th grade and continue throughout HS.

Ditto that the FCPS staff for transfers is very helpful. I won't give her name here - but do call. She's very "sweet" - her name and number is on the FCPS site. I've talked to her twice - once years ago for a kindergarten placement for a younger sibling and just this year for a middle school issue. Mine are all foreign language issues!

Isn't Annandale and IB school? You shouldn't have too much of a problem leaving Annandale, since IB is hotter now than AP.

Also check the space at the school. the rules are the closest school with the program that has space. My DC should go to West Springfield, but since they are full they are sent to LB.

There are maps on the FCPS that shows under/over enrollment.

Don't think IB is hotter than AP. There are usually lots of transfers out of Annandale. But Woodson is also picking up kids from Fairfax next year, so maybe it will be easier to get LB instead.
