Probably an accurate statement. |

So talking with a friend of mine at the ECNL showcase this weekend. Also I’ll say he told me last summer at surf cup about the age change that was coming and has some very reliable people that he knows. Here is the info I got. It sounds like the Aug hater might get their way and kids will play within their grade within the new 12 month window.
Well sort of… According to him ECNL is most likely breaking into 3 different groups. Youngers U10-12 and U13-15 and older recruiting ages U16,17,19. U10-15 will no longer play showcases but will have various cups throughout the year with divisions and tournament champions. Strong RL teams will be invited to these as well. U10-15 will be based only off the Aug to July 12 month window. However U16/17 will be based off players grades between that 12 month window. So some kids will be pushed up for showcases so they will play against kids within their same grade. League play is still tbd. He didn’t know for sure. U19 will be for any player who is a senior in high school, age will not matter as long as they are under 19 at the start their club season. He also has more questions than answers at this point but this is what’s being discussed by ECNL/US Club admin team. |
Good luck with all that. Instead of making things ridiculously complicated. Just implement a rule that Aug and younger players must play with their grade in school. Do this and all the issues go away. |
Or make everything stupid complicated and watch while GA implements a rule that Aug and younger players must play with their grade in school. GA will look more professional because they're not letting players play down a grade and everything will be less complicated for GA to implement. |
U should wait longer before u reply to yourself, that way it’s possible you could fool one of the dimmer readers… wait sorry that is not even possible. |
Haha, GA will start using biobanding just like MLS, so August-born players will have options. |
| If mlsn2=SY and mlsn1=BY then current u12 with Aug-Dec birthdays have to play up a year for mlsn2 starting in 2026, or repeat u12 premls? If they repeat u12 in the correct new SY age groupings they would then be developmental locked into mlsn2 going forward it seems. otherwise, they would have to play back up a year to get on BY MLsN1? |
Yes. All aug to dec birthdays would need to skip u12 if going from 8/1 to 1/1 cutoffs. Same birthdays coming from a non-mlsnext club would need to skip an age group moving from 8/1 to 1/1. I have a Q4 son on a premlsnext team. He’s fine if mlsnext stays 1/1 but my question to the published email would be… what is the club doing for the top u8-u12 teams? Sure seemed like they were going 8/1. What a mess. |
Or, maybe our friend's ECNL-related post is a savvy effort to troll. |
| I talked to our GA technical director yesterday and he said they are taking a case by case view of where to put kids next year, even with August birthdays (we are in a 9-1 state) because I asked him specifically. He said they want every player to develop optimally and they have 3 choices where to put a current GA August birthday: GA senior team, GA Aspire or GA senior team of the year below. |

Thinking through the idea that mlsnext 1 stats 1/1 and mlsnext 2 goes 8/1.
How does mlsnext 1 attract clubs to join in the future? All other clubs will be 8/1. The club would have to switch to 1/1 and there is no guarantee their new teams would be strong. Mlsnext 2 would be totally separate from mlsnext 1. Couldn’t play them, no pathway from 2 to 1. How is that attractive to clubs to join mlsnext 2? |
Yea right. This post is 100% made up. |
Yeah and if it isnt, sounds like a complete disaster to manage. Much simpler to set a standard and only compromise for a very few exceptional cases |
It's even easier to not tell parents anything then one day present them next seasons team rosters. |
