Ikea Hemnes daybed with a non-Ikea (i.e. normal thickness) mattress?

Thinking of getting this bed from Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30080316/ for our guest room. I like the storage and the fact that it extents to sleep 2. I already have 2 twin mattresses, which I'm hoping to use on the bed. But they are a bit thicker than the skinny mattresses Ikea sells. Anybody use a Hemnes daybed with a non-ikea mattress? How about stacking 2 mattresses on it? Is that just too tall?

Haven't tried it but if length and width fit, the height won't extend above the rails, so I don't see the problem. You might need to use two fitted sheets or a sheet and a skirt even when the day bed if folded in. I doubt they make "California twin" bed sheets.

PP, you should go in person w/tape measurer and figure it out. The height may hit at awkward spot.

What do folks think about this as the bed in room for tween? Room has awkward layout.

I do not like this bed, OP. I bought an Ikea Hemnes bed with a footboard that's square like the sides of this bed, and I kept getting bruises on my thighs from banging into the thing. Finally I put a quilt over the end of the bed to save my legs!

This bed looks even worse than mine, with those high sides. If they were curved, you wouldn't bang into them. Plus it looks a little flimsy. I love the storage though. Ikea stuff it a b***h to put together though. I just put together a Hemnes cabinet and it took forever!

I'd keep looking if I were you.

The Hemnes cabinet and dresser take forever. The bed is very quick to put together. We had the regular bed which took under 5 minutes to assemble. The daybed will be longer because building the shelf boxes takes several minutes.

I liked the Hemnes because it was wood instead of MDF, but it still feels somewhat cheaply made. The bed was falling apart when we got rid of it. But we did get a number of years of use out of it and had two adults sleeping in it every night. I would expect a daybed that's used primarily as a guest bed to last a pretty long time.

I actually like the look of the Brimnes daybed online better than the Hemnes, but I could see it feeling cheap in person, and it might make the mattress problem worse.

Also, I have never banged into the bed. No offense, PP, but I think that's specific to you, not the bed.

I thought Hemnes had died in the fire?

wouldn't it be hard to change bedsheets with a daybed?

I have that bed and use just a regular twin mattress, no foundation and it works fine. Took days to put together, pain the butt. I am thinking of expanding it out with a full mattress now.

I love this. I think that I could use it in my extra room. Now, the dumb question, if you want to keep it as a sofa most of the time but have it as a double for guestbed, how does the mattress work for that?

I think you buy two of the thinner ikea mattress and stack them. I'm assuming the reason OP does not want to do this is because the thinner IKEA mattress is not particularly comfortable.

We have the exact set up you describe, OP, in our 4 yo's room and it's great. We've been pleased with the quality - better than what we paid twice for at Land of Nod ( C&B kids line). We have the dresser too and are very happy withit

Do you have two regular sized mattresses on the bed or one?

18:18 here - sorry, I missed the part about 2 mattresses. No, we have 1 regular (non-ikea) mattress. It's a pillow top but pretty standard sized. I think 2 might be much, but measure and see what you think. What if you kept the second in a closet to use on the trundle part when needed?
