Yes. We have to pay. We attacked them unprovoked, committed heinous war crimes, and now we must pay.

I agree with the part in bold, but don’t quite see why the US would pay have to pay reparations if we just left. Ethically, we probably should, but that’s not my question.

Because Iran then would close the SOH leading to pandemonium. That economic and political pain would be much worse than working out an agreement. Leading up to the MOU Trump was desperate for a deal and was too weak to push back to Iran's demands that included reparations.

What would guarantee that they wouldn’t just close it again? “We want another $100b, Strait is closed”.

The only thing that will shut down the strait is Israel continuing the war. Israel must be controlled.

You are correct that Iran could threaten again. In that scenario, other countries with better ties to Iran (China, Russia?) could tell them to cool it.

The JCPOA had other countries on board (including China and Russia) to collectively restrain Iran.

Every now and then it's important and step back and recognize that when you see some foreign despot in South America or Africa or Europe or Asia robbing the country blind and running it like a mob takeover, the reason it is sinister because they speak a foreign language or where funny clothes. It happens here in English-speaking suit-wearing America too.
