Not having a second / vacation home makes me feel poor & depressed. Anyone else?

No, we are home bodies. We have the home and pool and yard just like we want it. We thoroughly enjoy our home. And, when we travel, we try new places or we repeat the same hotel with outstanding service. We would find it a hassle to keep packing up to go to the same country home.

Most people with second homes travel too. If you have to choose between a second home and travel, then you can't afford the second home.

It’s a cope. The “travelers” simply can’t afford a second home and their travel budget is shit too. Flying eco class to Iceland or Japan or whatever the trendy cheap place is is not some decadent life. They’re middle class.

There are so many great Airbnbs available that I don’t envy second homeowners. The hassle of maintenance and management isn’t worth it when you can easily find a fantastic place to rent. We have our go-to spots in our favorite destinations, and we’ve never had a problem finding a great house to rent for the duration we need.

not true at all. there are lots of great houses to rent that are 5000+ per night. lots of us don’t want to commit to going back to the same place over and over again and even if we do, there’s an abundance of really nice rentals.

Obviously it’s nice to avoid DC swamp weather. If spending the summer somewhere cooler is affordable for you and workable from a schedule standpoint, then of course that’s a great choice. If it wasn’t such an attractive option, people wouldn’t do it. Trust me, they’re not doing it for the wrong reasons. Even Cleveland Park started as a second-home community, because it was cooler due to being higher up from the Potomac.

Gee, and here I was being depressed because tens of thousands of innocent people are dying in unnecessary global conflicts. I guess I will start being depressed about not having a second home.

Buying the 3rd place in Big Sky made all the difference for me. We might leave here and buy a farm in Virginia soon but right now we are getting by with here, Ack, Montana and trips to London and St. Barths every year.

You should go topple the Hamas leaders, the Ayatollahs and Putin. I will invite you to my place in the Catskills after you are done.

+1 Take out those 3 leaders causing all the trouble and I'll let you use my house in Rehoboth Beach too!

Anyone who can actually afford to blow $5,000 a night has more than one home. You're not kidding anyone, just stop.

Nah, not young people. I work with a centimillionaire who has only one home. They have spent the last three summers in different locations. They rent a ski-in ski-out home over winter break. Youth sports and school limit their window of opportunity to be away.

We have plenty of money for a 2nd home. We had one at one point. We sold one house for a profit. We moved to our second home and have no use for a DC house. Our kids go to great private schools where we are and we go to DC as needed. We are in a second home destination and have no desire to have a home in DC again.

Some people just don’t want to deal with the hassle of a second house.

Tell me about my cope?

Thank God you are "getting by"!

It’s a struggle.

Due to kids’ sports and activities, we don’t use it enough to justify the expense. And, finally, I’d rather travel than go to our weekend home.

This was us exactly! I miss it about one or two times a year ( usually after we visit friends who still have a place.) Love not having the responsibility or guilt for not using it very much, and enjoy traveling again.

Time suck and money pit.

Generally second home areas don't appreciate like regular towns/cities because the second home areas are built with low quality houses/condos.

lol. The 2020-era geniuses of DCUM. Good lord, so many broke imbeciles here.
