+ 1 And isn't a new phenomena. My dad grew up in the 40s in a 3-room apartment, and when the "boychik" was studying (which was hours every evening), his parents (my grandparents) didn't even play the radio in the next room because it might disturb his concentration! He said dinner was lively, but when study time came, they whispered and tiptoed around. The priority was that dad would get good grades and admitted to a good college.

That's probably true for UMC/Affluent Whites. I don't think that is necessarily true of Asians and Jews. Most of them were poor/working class when they came to the US and were typically not even allowed into good schools, or were subjected to quotas. The difference is that Asians and Jews feel like they can make a difference in their lives if they work hard. I think AAs often have a defeatist attitude about things, which has a negative impact on motivation and resilience when working toward long-term goals. And yes I recognize that centuries of slavery are probably a major factor here. The Holocaust, as awful as it was, did not last for generations (although violent persecution of Jews has been around for millennia) I have noticed that non-AA Africans (born in Africa) are as successful as other cultures.

You can keep all that stuff hush hush while you brag about your kids' test scores.

The fact is, schools in the U.S. are failing our entire American culture. That goes for K-12 and higher education. It goes for the poor and for the wealthy. There's too large a percentage of people who are left unprepared to contribute to society or even to support themselves, let alone a family. And those of us who are more fortunate either have to pick up the slack and support those who aren't or reinforce the steel toes on our boots and kick them down. We are so much closer to a caste system than a meritocracy that any discussion of values like the one in this thread is a sad joke.

Do you not see the irony of sitting with that as an acceptable reality while blathering on about who "values education" more? If you truly valued education, you would demand that everyone get it. Get it?

So you're saying that kids learn to study and do their homework from their parents, who presumably learned it from their parents, who presumably learned it from theirs, who presumably learned it from theirs, and so on and so forth. In other words, what happened generations ago still continues to affect kids today. Huh.

If only there was a way to break the cycle...
