Two Women Shot in Alexandria; Police Searching for Suspect

The only new stuff they will be announcing is autopsy results. There's been no progress in the case.

How have they not announced whether or not the bullets from the shootings match? Or the distance/range from which they were shot in the Lodato & Kirby cases?

This is information relevant to the investigation and community, and helps shed light on whether or not the shootings may be related or carried out by the same perp.

Forensics tests take time. NBC4 said they're expecting new info on forensic evidence at the press conference. We'll see.

Dunning, Lodato, and Kirby forensics seem to be related. Weapon appears to be linked.

Yes but not certain. Still scary.

Suspect appears to "present" himself at the door, so it appears the shootings were all done at close range. That is, the killer did not ring the doorbell then run and hide/shoot further away from a bush, car, etc.

Sketch is still being supported.

Authorities encourage people to study this, and see if it triggers memory not just in the recent cases, but in the Dunning case 10 years ago (with suspect being 10 years younger). The 3 murderers have not been definitively linked, but police are publicly asserting the similarities and shootings as a possible "series."

They just did.

Police Receive Ballistics Report in Lodato Homicide

The Alexandria Police Department has received forensic reports from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Forensic Science regarding the recent homicide of Ruthanne Lodato in comparison to evidence collected in previous homicides.

Their analysis shows that the bullets recovered from the Lodato case exhibit the same general rifling class and characteristics and are similar in design to bullets submitted in both the Ron Kirby and Nancy Dunning cases. However, the results of the microscopic comparisons were inconclusive. It was not possible to identify or eliminate these bullets as having been fired from the same firearm.

The similarities and unusual nature of all three shootings occurring in Alexandria require the Police Department to consider the possibility that all cases are linked together. Detectives are receiving assistance from state and federal agencies to pursue the cases as a series, yet at the same time keep all options open.

Victim Date Approximate Time Location
Nancy Dunning Dec. 5, 2003 10:50-11:30 AM 200 blk W. Mt. Ida Avenue
Ron Kirby Nov. 11, 2013 11:30 AM- 12 PM 200 blk of Elm Street
Ruthanne Lodato Feb. 6, 2014 11:30 AM 2400 blk of Ridge Road Drive

The suspect in the Lodato case is described as an older white male, with gray hair and a full beard. He was last seen wearing tan outerwear. Please take the time to review the information and consider whether you know someone who generally fits the suspect description, who lived or had ties to the area around the times of the homicides, or who may have spent considerable amounts of time in these areas.

We appreciate the public’s assistance throughout these investigations. We will release information to the public only when we are certain it is accurate and appropriate to release. This is our obligation to the community, to the victims’ families, and to the integrity of the investigation.

The Alexandria Police Department asks that anyone with information about a person with ties to any of these crimes or who may resemble the composite is asked to contact the Alexandria Police Department at 703.746.6864 or email crimetips@alexandriva.gov.

Was there a suspect description from the Dunning or Kirby cases? Are they similar to the description/sketch we have from the Lodato case?

There were no witnesses in the Kirby case (and thus, zero suspect description). Not sure about the Dunning case, but I think similar. The Lodato case is the only one with witnesses, a description, and a sketch. Hence police asking people to dig deep into their memories from the other two cases, and see if the sketch triggers someone's memory from those times, that they maybe shrugged off.

So, was the surveillance video of the person referenced below ever released? I can't find a photo anywhere.

Police sought the public’s help in identifying a potential witness, a man who was photographed by Target’s surveillance camera. The potential witness was seen in the same area as Nancy Dunning. They exited simultaneously at 10:30 a.m. the day she was killed. To this day, the witness has not been identified.

Nancy Dunning was shot in the back three times.

I worry that the suspect description might be all wrong. Has it ever stated that the description was corroborated with MULTIPLE eyewitnesses? The surviving victim, and someone else? If it's just one account... it just doesn't hold my faith.

I read that a neighbor saw the suspect running from the house. No clue if the neighbor saw the suspect's face.
