I knew one. She was one of my daughter’s best friends in elementary school. For people who have only heard of sports there are other ways to over schedule. She went to two different dance schools, cheerleading, gymnastics, voice lessons, musical theatre. She was a Jack of all trades master of none. Literally never mastered any of them. And her mother was mean. The few times she was allowed over our house she was so happy to just hang out. We took her to a family barbecue once where their small town had fireworks and a carnival. Things she had never done before. |
You act like all these kids actually like what they do. |
Mine do. |
Playgrounds are ok for middle school if they have a basketball court, exercise equipment, fields. We aren’t talking about the slides. |
I notice parents use the word Athlete pretty loosely. Russia, China, and other countries hand pick kids who are clearly in the top 1% in all aspects of what it takes to be an athlete. In Canada kids play hockey in the frozen lake down the street as soon as they can walk. This is America where the kids are made to believe that all they need is hard work and they will be an athlete wanted by colleges and then maybe pro. So parents sign their kid up for private coaching even though they are doing just fine on their team. They play a sport year round in different places. They think their kid is a talented athlete. Maybe but probably not. Big business gives a lot of kids false hope so they continue to pay them money. |
There were plenty of parents back then that didn’t initiate anything. The motivated kids were at the basketball court every day or skating and ice hockey where there was cold weather. The local fields had baseball diamonds where you could go with a few kids and practice. I know growing up this is what everyone did until they joined school sports. And I know former pros in football, hockey and lacrosse. So stop blaming your parents when it was you who didn’t have the drive to do it. |
Ok. You know what you’re talking about. When you know better, you do better. |
Do better for what exactly? What so bad about playing sports informally with other kids? It was always lots of fun, probably moreso than being on any team. |
Not all kids like basketball or fields. Dull. Why not let them do what they enjoy? |
If this a park or playground with space, then can play any sport or game that they wish. |
I don’t know one kid whose parents think their kid is going to play pro. My kids’ friends want to play in high school. Very few may play in college. |
It may not be about going pro, but it is about college scholarships. Parents don't want to have to pay got college. |
Thanks for your permission ![]() |
Permission? I wasn't giving permission for anything. Young teens can enjoy parks/playgrounds. That's what I was getting at. |
So, how do they swim? |
