My kids are too young to be accessing the internet on their own and don’t have devices, but this article is really scaring me. My oldest is 10 and some of her friends have phones, and play Roblox. I am considering getting her a phone next year but feel like I have so much work to do to prepare.

Stuff like that makes me think I don't want to be out in the world, and same with my kids. I want to just move to a little isolated farm and ignore it all. It is so disturbing, I wish I didn't read it.

I realize the China part with Tiktok, but the article states the other sites would change if they were made legally responsible for what is encouraged on their platforms. Why is there no talk of making this happen? I can't imagine Congress is unaware.

True. And more than half the States Attorney Generals are suing the social media companies based on 2 premises:

- social media is intentionally made to be addicting and,

- evidence shows social media is harmful to children.

Try pointing that out on DCUM though, and you will be attacked by defensive mommies who have already given their children smart phones with open access to any social media they want.

This is so horrific. We have recently installed very tight parental controls for my 10 and 12 year olds, and done a lot of talking about how to stay safe online. But I am all too aware that no parental controls are perfect and they are going to have to learn to navigate this terrifying world on their own at some point. I’d welcome any wisdom about how to really talk to kids about internet safety in a way they understand. The “digital citizenship” classes at school just don’t seem to resonate.
