Plenty of trial updates. The BMW recorder data shows Shahid accelerated from 60 to 81 and never applied the brake. Defense tried to blame the 4 Runner driver, but he testified he stopped for pedestrians while making a turn and was struck by Shahid. Shahid only had a learner’s permit and should not have been driving with his friends at all. Defense called only witness, a private investigator.

Sounds like closing arguments are today. Hopefully the jury can reach a guilty verdict soon.

Specifically, he was stopped in the lane of oncoming traffic. He turned before it was clear. He was not blameless. Hopefully he also faces consequences during the civil case.

The driver of the SUV should have completed their turn and hit the pedestrians. They were probably crossing against the crosswalk signals given that the light was turning yellow. Remember, there is no duty to yield the right of way to unruly pedestrians. /s

No, the 4Runner should have waited until it was clear to start the turn. AKA don't start turning when pedestrians are blocking your path.

Do we know if a pedestrian walked out after the turn was started?

At least from the public reporting, we don’t. And it sounds like there may be no testifying pedestrian eyewitnesses. All the discussion about the 4 Runner driver’s culpability is a distraction that the defense is more than happy to engage with.

is anyone at the trial?

I think it matters. If his parents were sponsored to come here, and then break the law (by allowing their unlicensed kid to drive) then the sponsor should be held responsible as well.

Do you demand this for every immigrant accused of a crime? Or just brown defendants?

This thread is so sickening.

Shahid is not brown.

This is from Reddit. That intersection is hugely problematic.

Between his mental health issues, confusing the brake and gas pedals as a new driver, and an illegal left turn, now a road design issue.

There is ZERO -- ZERO -- evidence that he "mistook" the gas pedal for the brake pedal.
There was no "illegal left turn."
There is no "road design issue." People have accidents. People in this area are not very good drivers. You have no idea what caused the alleged accident today. We DO know what caused the "accident" in 2022.... an unlicensed teen driver, unlawfully speeding over twice the speed limit, unlawfully carrying two other teens in the car. That is what caused the deaths and injuries.

See the video around 1:24 https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/northern-virginia/defense-rests-in-oakton-fatal-crash-case/3598460/

You can see how far that BMW traveled FAR beyond the impact with the SUV. He not only hit the SUV and killed three teen girls, he also took out a thick utility pole and STILL Continued to advance down the road!

That particular stretch is a known problem in Oakton. Residents have been trying for a long time to fix it.

I’ve been in the area for a long time and up until this point where people died, it was almost comical how many times people in cars managed to run off of the road and smash into and take down the utility poles.

They’d patch them, graft them, replace them, then at some point they decided to install concrete poles. But that didn’t really fix the problem, since I’ve seen the concrete ones come down too.

Unfortunately a lot of people are dumb and that never changes.

Your intersection isn't special. You have described most intersections in Northern Virginia. Any sign in the middle of highway has a 50/50 chance of being there tomorrow.

Anonymous wrote:Driver only had a learners permit?! WTF? Did the parents allow him to drive to school and then where ever they were going at the time of the crash? That seems pretty crazy.

If that's true he was breaking the law by driving unsupervised by a licensed driver. The county bears some responsibility for not enforcing that.

No the parents do for giving him their car. But he was 18. Why wouldn't he have his license?

A lot of kids around here do not get their license until they are 18.

I dont know a single one. I have 3 kids - all of them - and every one of their friends - wanted their license as soon as they turned 16.

Very common in DC where the kids walk or take public transportation everywhere.

Yes but then their parents don't buy a BMW and allow their kid to drive to school. There are kids who don't get a license till then but they also don't get a new car before their license either.

Can someone explain to me the trend of buying first generation American high school students a BMW, Mercedes, or some other crotch rocket?

I went to high school in Southern California in the 1990s and the ONLY kids with nice fast cars (e.g., BMWs or Mercedes or tricked out & sup'ed up Hondas and Toyotas) were the kids of 1st Generation immigrants. The rest of us (white, African-American, Japanese-American sixth generation Californian, Mexican-American) all had old cheap used cars, if we had a car at all.

Who in their right mind gives a teen boy a crazy powerful vehicle?

You mean defending the killer of 2 POC girls?

He accelerated to 81 miles an hour. 81 miles an hour. If he was going to speed limit, the chances of anyone getting hurt or killed, would have been very low. The driver of the other vehicle would have seen him coming and would have either hit the brakes or would have avoided a collision altogether. The victims of this were innocent children who were walking home from school looking forward to their summer break, which never came. Usman Shahid was given an expensive car by his parents for graduation. He’s a spoiled brat who had a sense of entitlement and was showing off to his friends. People lost their lives because of this young man and he needs to be punished severely and spend time in prison at least for several years to reflect on what he has done. Even then, he gets off lightly compared to those girls who will never ever graduate from high school because of his actions. blaming the other vehicle is absolutely Stupidity because he wasn’t going 81 miles an hour. Shahid was. The only decision should be guilty and sentence should be harsh. This should teach future young drivers not to behave like this.

I also went to high school in So. Cal in the 1990s and that wasn't my experience. The only student from my class with a new BMW was a white (non immigrant parents) girl.
My first generation boyfriend (parents were from Hong Kong) had a used tiny truck--remember those really small trucks with a bench seat and no cab that a lot of teen boys drove back then?

This is going to happen in front of BCC High School if some people don't slow down

More money than sense. It's not an immigrant thing. It's a money thing. Cars are more expensive today than when we were learning to drive but high incomes are a lot higher now.

I'm guessing it may be a symbolic status type of thing for immigrants. Like a "look, I've really made it".

I won't get lost. Instead I'll hold a mirror to your face so you can see how ugly your bigotry is.
