Madison H.S. Parents - Principal Survey and Skills-Based Grading

We get it. Your kid is in AP classes and already mostly through the system and doesn't have to worry about this stuff.

Or school is just her social circle and kids already through system.

Unfortunately, SBG is used in AP classes too.

Yea, but at least it’s a common set of standards imposed by the College Board for every student taking that subject There isn’t huge inconsistency between sections in the same school the way there was this year. And the teacher can’t do what one of DDs teachers did during second quarter and decide to just drop a standard she didn’t like, subsequently erasing all of the associated grades from the grade book and switching to new standards that she now had less than three full quarters to assess. DDs AP class this past year was much more transparent than any of the classes Madison admin had control over.

And you have less disinterested kids in AP classes.

"High school students registered in any Fairfax County Public School or alternative high school are eligible to apply to take up to two credits through the FCPS Online Campus for scheduling conflicts or personal reasons, including health." Is this per year?

Any suggestions for strategies would be welcome.

Suggestion #1: Therapy to reduce your anxiety about something that your teen can adapt to on his/her own.

If you are so worried about other kids not doing the homework such that it degrades the classroom experience for your kid, then taking an on line class probably isn't going to result in a lot of stimulating classroom discussion. But, hey --- you do you. If SBG does bother you as much as you have said, then it probably is best to make other arrangements.

What an ugly, snippy response to a wholly unnecessary change in grading practices that responds to the latest equity-based nonsense and has largely only served to diminish the classroom experience, weaken study habits, and create confusion and anxiety. And it’s probably no coincidence that it’s happening at one of the county’s best high schools - the people in Gatehouse know the best way to reduce the achievement gap among FCPS high schools is to bring down the top schools.

Yes all part of the plan to introduce equitable grading by Gatehouse.

This type of obnoxious attitude seems way too common in Vienna. Whether is it comes to the school or any other type of town happening-questions are not to be tolerated. It is a very conformist town, more so than I had realized until it was pointed out on this board a few years ago.
