I started a new job ten months ago. I was a childcare worker and desperately needed a new field- I had been in the nanny/childcare field for maybe eight years and was burnt out. I now work in property management, in an office environment. I have posted here before but can't find the thread.
I was so happy to make the switch, and I love my co-workers. The paperwork is easy, computer systems are easy, usual business is fine- but it's the day-to-day issues with the residents. Every day there are complaints/concerns that I am not equipped to handle, and just flat-out don't want to. I know I sound like a brat, hence the 'snap me out of it' part of my title. But, I didn't realize how customer service oriented the job would be. In hindsight, I should have known. I get yelled at, bitched at, angry emails/phone calls- and because our office is within the residences - they barge in multiple times a day. It's not like I'm dealing with a rude customer that I'll never see again - they live where I work, and they are relentless. Part of the problem is I am low on the totem pole and don't have much experience with CS - but like I said, I don't WANT to have experience with it. My entire body tenses up when a resident comes in to bitch. Yesterday, I felt like I was going to cry. I get extremely frustrated when there's a problem that I can't just fix. I get anxious when someone plant down in front my desk and goes on and on and on about something that I know will not go away. I don't know what to do. So many positions deal with rude people, bad aspects of the job, problems that can't be fixed, etc -- so possibly I should just get used to it? |

I'm sorry. I left my job as a preschool/kindergarten teacher to take a much higher paying job many years ago. I lasted less than a year. I love working with kids. It's just who I am.
I found a job as a daycare director and LOVED it!!! We moved and I found my dream job! I work as a children's program director in a huge neighborhood rec center. Perfect job for me! I 'm not going to tell you to "snap out of it" because maybe the job just isn't the right one for you. I'll take 75 loud summer camp kids over a quiet office environment any day! I would use this time to find a job you like! |
| What are these problems that can't be fixed? Why can't you fix them? |

You need training. In the meantime read stuff. Like this...
http://customerservicezone.com/faq/indexangrycustomers.htm http://m.wikihow.com/Deal-With-Rude-Customers The reason OP can't fix it is because she does not make the rules. She can't change the rules. You will learn "buzz phrases" like I completely understand I am going to work with you to resolve yor issue That makes me frustrated too, I will let my boss know Angry people are illogical. Once you master this you WILL be marketable. |
