Just finished The Queen's gambit on Netflix

No one has mentioned what was for me one of the most compelling and nuanced parts of the show . Beths relationship with her adoptive mom. I thought it was loving and genuine and yet slightly formal and of course flawed and dysfunctional. I found it convincing and lovely.

I feel almost exactly the same way. It was interesting and pretty to watch, but seemed like a hodge podge of characters and concepts. It did remind me how much I love Searching For Bobby Fisher, so now I want to re-watch that (for the 20th time, probably).
