And her kids have graduated. As a citizen she is free to vote her conscience but her kids are not (no longer?) in a school being kept overcrowded or under capacity while the board revises policy meant to reconstitute the school in a way likely to separate them from friends and neighbors. |
| And her kids graduated already lol. |
Didn't want to move to Herndon, huh? I love how these people talk about equity and "teach children where they are" yet don't live it. |
Depends on what you consider success. They were so tired of the boundaries and busing they "wiped out their school board" as Meghan said. The new school board drew lines for neighborhood schools. The voters made a majority democratic board the next time and they did not go back to the same plan that got the previous Democrats thrown out. |
All these Wake County references made me curious about what actually happens there. It has about 160k students and FCPS 188k and both are county wide with mix of ruralish to suburban to urbanish. "Ish" since none are really like Rosslyn or NYC. NC is coming up with lower statewide class size maximums than VA so that could have an effect there. As per Edweek: In FCPS the Equity Dept appears to be more influential or more important than Instructional Services. Current Wake County information is in this Edweek article: https://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2019/08/12/a-losing-fight-to-keep-schools-desegregated.html?utm_source=fb&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mrss Notable mention of Charter schools where 1 gives continuity K-8 and academics are Core Knowledge and Singapore Math. Wake County actual. Pick any address you find in Wake County and see assigned schools, magnets, and modes of transportation : attendance area maps: http://wwwgis2.wcpss.net/addressLookup/ Randomly clicked on Carpenter ES. Big orange is the school and surroundings and small oranges are also in the attendance area. Here's 1 address in the small oranges: 400 York St Cary 27511 Then Adams ES : address 128 Maynard Summit Way Cary 27511 http://wwwgis2.wcpss.net/pdf_maps/BASE_MAP_1920_304.pdf So apply however they did boundaries for a locator like FCPS has and figure it out... http://wwwgis2.wcpss.net/addressLookup/index.php HS base school maps-1st and last in alphabetical order: Apex Friendship http://wwwgis2.wcpss.net/pdf_maps/BASE_MAP_1920_317.pdf Wake Forest HS map http://wwwgis2.wcpss.net/pdf_maps/BASE_MAP_1920_588.pdf Are the small orange islands for Wake Forest the SES infusion? IDK. If so apply the methodology to FCPS HS's with lower than average disadvantaged [as per Wake County they can't use race] and create islands assigned to schools like Mclean, Langley, Oakton, Madison etc. Maybe they reverse and infuse residential areas currently assigned to schools like those 3 to other schools. So I guess that would move Forestville to Herndon and a title 1 comes out. Moving some Mclean students to Langley is really a separate decision for FCSB than implementing a current Wake County style method of school assignment. That CIP amendment could move 100 out of Mclean and then apply demographic movement as part of a later endeavor. The reality is FCPS is not into maximizing potential trailer removal across this county. If it was we'd see more gone and different capacity enhancements on the bond. |
McLean pyramid has a Title I feeder from Falls Church that is 55-60% FARMS. Langley has no similar area and they are working overtime this election to try and make sure they never do. |
| And the low SES feeder into McLean, Timberlane, is quite small with only 575 students. The impact to McLean is a total of 8.5% poverty. Herndon's two high SES feeders average out to 600 each but it two lowest SES feeders (65 & 80% poverty) average out to 1000 students each. The other two feeders are a bit smaller but are about 50% poverty each. Two adjacent pyramids have low poverty and neither can help? |
McLean is around 10% farms. No one from Langley pitched a fit about Strauss's idea I'm January to move some lower income apartments to Langley. |
Besides the screamer who revealed herself to not have kids at Herndon (so trolling all along I guess) Who at Herndon has gone to other schools or to the board saying that the poor kids are a burden they think should be shared? McLean parents formed Mcspaces to push the school board on overcrowding, and their Citizens association made similar efforts. Has Herndon formed a group to reboundary some poor kids out? Do they have a citizen association pushing the school board to do the same? The few Herndon parents I know aren't complaining. In online discussions I have seen Herndon parents defend and praise the school. If Herndon is not trying to push FARMs out why should anyone else try to yank them out? |

The big story of this election is how a group of Langley parents from the Forestville ES part of Great Falls got so agitated over a rumor that they might get moved back to Herndon some day (never mind that Langley is under capacity and Herndon is full) that they started a well-funded group to try and replace the Democrats on the School Board with a bunch of right-wing Republicans more to their liking.
When they realized that people elsewhere wouldn’t care much about something that might only affect the Langley boundaries in 2032, they changed their name from “One Great Falls” to “Voices of Fairfax,” started pretending to care about the overcrowding at McLean, and struck an alliance with people like Elizabeth Schultz. Then they found a weak candidate in Dranesville who only moved to the DC area after Trump’s election (Anastasia Karloutsos) and continued to spread misinformation about the School Board’s plans, in particular by suggesting that even considering SES factors when adjusting boundaries is tantamount to a county-wide redistricting to bus kids at every level back and forth across the county. The lies were so egregious that Superintendent Scott Brabrand, who has every incentive to stay out of their politics, felt compelled to issue a statement and video to debunk their claims. Fortunately, there is a good choice in Dranesville: Elaine Tholen. She’s a long-time county resident and educator, with a strong commitment to forward-looking thinking. She lives in Great Falls, so it’s not like she’s going to throw Langley overboard, but her election should help put the non-productive rumor-mongering of groups like VOF to a halt. |
| That's nice dear. |
Some did. And someone previously posted Mobasheri’s comments from earlier this year. He obviously didn’t want anyone moved into Langley then and only changed his position when he decided to run for Strauss’s seat. |
Bingo! |
Every time I see her I can't help but think she'd rather be planning solar panels, cataloging trees and taking samples from local streams. |

The school board's latest draft took out consideration of impact on neighborhoods and elevated ses diversity as a primary concern.
Their direct communication with the public pretends that policy is being reviewed because of overcrowding and trailers. |
