Would it make you feel better if OP had said "the only white, non Spanish speaking person" in her class? Yes, I agree with the other posters, you don't want to be associated with those other, darker, Hispanics. Just admit it. It's an anonymous board. |
And here is the hard voice of authority, choosing to crush the dissent voiced by a minority. First, deleting my post explaining the request. Second, choosing to maintain a factual mistake over correcting it. If someone ever wonders why there are so few Hispanics on DCUM, even if we account for over 10% of DC population, simply remember this post. |
Would you like some cheese with that order? |
I think you meant Cheese with that whine[i]. Hispanic PP, be honest please... why are you so worked up over this? Anyone else would have moved on, yet you keep coming back. Where is your dog in this fight? And why are you derailing OP's thread by trying to be the top dog? Not being snarky, but maybe you should start your own thread. Because at this point you sound really petty. |
1) You obviously know little about Hispanics. Not all of us speak Spanish. Not all of us speak only Spanish. Too confusing for you? Try to learn more, and jump to judgement less. 2) As I posted earlier (now deleted by censor Jeff), I would have been saying exactly the same things had OP titled this thread "My daughter is the only black girl in her grade: ask me anything" and then it turned out that 50% of her classmates were black aswell, but of Hispanic ethnicity. I would have felt the same way, this is, OP is robbing some kids from their identity, from their blackness (or whiteness) 3) What I'm truly shocked by is how openly OP, supermoderator Jeff and others like you are choosing to ignore our voices. And you truly believe you're better than Trump? |
Imagine DCUM had been around 100 years ago. What would have happened here to the first black person trying to explain why the word "n*gger" is not appropriate? Yep. Something like "Black PP, be honest please... why are you so worked up over this? Anyone else would have moved on, yet you keep coming back. Where is your dog in this fight? And why are you derailing OP's thread by trying to be the top dog? Not being snarky, but maybe you should start your own thread. Because at this point you sound really petty." |
|
If OP had said - 'my child is white and upper SES in a title one school' that would have worked as well.
|
| So, what is everyone having for dinner today? We had pan fried salmon with rice. |
It appears that I will have to continue deleting your posts, if not actually blocking you from posting. Your point has been made repeatedly in this thread. Even though I have deleted numerous messages, there are still multiple posts in which you explain your position. I am not preventing you from making your point, but preventing you from making it so frequently that nothing else can be discussed. I am declaring an end to discussion of the subject line of the thread. It has been clearly established beyond any doubt that some Hispanics identify as white and object to not being described as white. That is an important point that we all should keep in mind. But, with that established, this thread really needs to get back on topic. So, additional posts off-topic posts will be deleted. |
I can't imagine being the kind of person who reads about someone else's experience and then shakes their head and accuses them of not "picking the best school, which is an option." Are you really so insecure that you need to belittle someone else's choice? Because, if so, one wonders why you post on the dc public school boards, since parents on all the other boards seem fairly united that none of our schools are "the best." |
I'm the PP you quoted, and I actually appreciate the OP's post. I view the school issues very similarly to her. My criticism was of other people who look at the DCPS website and avoid our school because there "aren't enough white people". I find that offensive probably not even accurate to their offensive criteria. |
That's a good point. And I still don't understand the premise behind OP's sense of uniqueness. Oyster Adams is one of the best performing schools in the city, and probably 60% Hispanic if not higher. Many anglos work hard to get their kids in. Why would it be a sacrifice to send DD there? |
Oyster Adams isn't a Title 1 school, with only a sprinkling of Anglos in it. Her school is. |
Oyster adams was title 1 till about 5 years ago. And there were hundreds of people waiting in line for hours to apply, most of them looking very white. Again, what's the big deal. |
My guess is this is a different demographic than OP's school. I'm no expert on DC's Latino population, but those I've encountered tend to be brown-skinned and from countries like Guatemala and El Salvador, in areas like Columbia Heights. |
