I think grad school is now the equivalent of what a high school diploma used to be. Everyone, including the not so bright or academic, is getting them.

I don't travel as much as I used to, but when I did, I preferred Europe/the UK. It's not that there aren't beautiful things to see in the USA. It's the social culture/atmosphere. I love foreign travel but to each his own. Something I have realised though is that there are places in this world that cannot be captured in a photo. I just went to Machu Picchu (a big bucket list item for me!) and being on top of the mountain and having the 360 view around you and feeling the energy of the place is something words and pictures cannot convey.

Yes. Machu Picchu is amazing and worth the trip. Another place like this is the Angkor temple complex in Cambodia. There are MANY others.
