All one needs to do is go to certain council members’ social media accounts and search for references to the police. It’s just criticism after criticism after criticism. No support at all. Recruitment for police is down nationwide, but it is critical here.

So 2 out of 11 current councilmembers are by themselves making police work so difficult that they need to reduce traffic stops by 2/3? Through their Twitter posts.

But don't forget the 30+ new legal mandates they've placed on police over the past 2 years, and all the negative discussion that surrounded those deliberations.

That sounds very persuasive but the police themselves are not blaming the "30+ legal mandates" for the work stoppage. They are blaming the "rhetoric". And I actually have listened to council sessions and find the notion that the rhetoric during the sessions was in any way offensive or abusive towards police hilarious. There are current and former councilmembers that are abusive bullies. Jawando, Hucker, Riemer and Mink are not in this group.

Wow. I had only seen the "defund police" one. She is clueless that systemic racism is everywhere and police are enforcing laws that legislators like her put on the books. For context: the October 2020 tweet (which is the first one I looked at) is related to the shooting of Walter Wallace by Philadelphia police; during the subsequent protests, Philadelphia police pulled Rickia Young and her teenage nephew out of their SUV, beat her, removed her two-year-old son, and lied about all of it on social media. The city settled out of court with Walter Wallace's family for $2.5 million, and with Rickia Young for $2 million. I think those actions by the Philadelphia police deserve criticism. What do you think?

Police officers should do the job they signed up to do, and are paid to do, ethically and to the best of their abilities - like the rest of us. Sometimes people will criticize them, fairly. That sounds very persuasive but the police themselves are not blaming the "30+ legal mandates" for the work stoppage. They are blaming the "rhetoric". And I actually have listened to council sessions and find the notion that the rhetoric during the sessions was in any way offensive or abusive towards police hilarious. There are current and former councilmembers that are abusive bullies. Jawando, Hucker, Riemer and Mink are not in this group.

This used to be the county law enforcement officers wanted to work for. It was a premier department. Now we can’t keep pace with any of the neighboring counties. The word is out that officers aren’t supported. It doesn’t matter whether you see it. Others do.

I think that MCPD has been saying "We're not like those other terrible police departments!" and that's true, but that doesn't mean there aren't also problems with MCPD. Plus the Montgomery County Council doesn't have legislative and funding authority over those other terrible police departments; it has legislative and funding authority over MCPD.

That sounds very persuasive but the police themselves are not blaming the "30+ legal mandates" for the work stoppage. They are blaming the "rhetoric". And I actually have listened to council sessions and find the notion that the rhetoric during the sessions was in any way offensive or abusive towards police hilarious. There are current and former councilmembers that are abusive bullies. Jawando, Hucker, Riemer and Mink are not in this group.

In any case, it doesn’t matter if you see it. We went from full recruit classes and the pick of applicants to barely being able to fill a class. This used to be the county law enforcement officers wanted to work for. It was a premier department. Now we can’t keep pace with any of the neighboring counties. The word is out that officers aren’t supported. It doesn’t matter whether you see it. Others do.

I think that MCPD has been saying "We're not like those other terrible police departments!" and that's true, but that doesn't mean there aren't also problems with MCPD. Plus the Montgomery County Council doesn't have legislative and funding authority over those other terrible police departments; it has legislative and funding authority over MCPD.

How is recruiting for the Gaithersburg PD and the Rockville PD, by the way?

People should be grateful that we have MCPD and not those other police departments. My fear is that this constant and ridiculous barrage against MCPD will only lead in one direction, MCPD getting worse.

They are driving recruits away, not a small minority of the County Council. Who would want to be a part of an organization where one is expected to protect fellow officers that harass and abuse BIPOC people.

Dear god. Please show me what I am missing. I would be happy to agree with you if I even knew what the problem is. You don’t even cite any specific incident or problem, just generally vague complaints that amount to vibes. I am a POC and have lived in a lot of places in my life and I can tell you, the vibes that I get from MCPD are pretty darn good. If there was a specific incident or incidents that can demonstrate that my experience is not the norm, I would really love to hear it and understand it. But you are absolutely not even trying to help me understand what the issue or your specific concern is. Instead you just make ad hominem attacks when I ask basic questions for understanding.

What makes you think I want to teach you anything? You have no interest in learning, just arguing. I posted earlier to dispute blatant lies being posted, such as the notion that the Council (or more specifically 2 out of 11 members) have hurt MCPD's feeling so deeply that they are unable to do their jobs, so much so that MCPD specifically cites "the rhetoric" for reducing traffic stops by two-thirds.

If the police can't do their jobs because of some tweets from one councilmember out of 11, sounds to me like her complaint that we are paying too much for police are spot on.

I have yet to see any evidence that police aren’t doing their jobs. I’ve seen one comment on this site that was paraphrased to suggest that, but nothing more.

We all know that minds will not be changed here on DCUM. Those who support her comments will continue to do so, and those who don’t will continue to do so.

So you think she was wrong to criticize the behavior of the Philadelphia police related to the killing of Walter Wallace Jr.?

Of course not. I read that tweet as a criticism of ALL police, however, not just the Philadelphia police. I see it as a condemnation of all men and women who serve as police. Her word choice is quite clear. When that tweet is considered alongside all of her others, it is even more clear.

I believe police should be held accountable. Where I think I differ is that I don’t hold ALL police accountable for the actions of a few. I can condemn despicable actions while simultaneously supporting the actions of those who serve honorably. I’m well aware there are others who can’t make that distinction.
